So I am trying to "black out" my truck. Chrome just isn't my flavor.
This morning I posted an ad on Craigslist to basically throw a line in the water, see if anyone with a work truck with black bumpers would be interested in a trade. I thought, nah, no one will bite.
I got a bite. Guy with a 2001 with black bumpers is interested. So, assuming his bumpers are in good condition, is there anything else I should know or be leery of? I haven't ever had my bumper off before. Any tips/tricks?
I am also assuming the bumpers and skirting will be exactly the same. Any reason I shouldn't?
Take the four bolts by the tow hooks off and the bumper is on the ground. Make sure it has no dents and take that baby to the paint shop and get some shiny black put on it.
I have an 03 XL with the 'argent gray' work truck bumpers and my Dad had an 02 XLT with the chrome bumpers. They were identical in how they fit and attached, you shouldn't have any problems at all. I just pulled mine off and painted the whole front end black this weekend, there's nothing to it.
IIRC, 00 and previous have different crash bars than 01+, but I don't remember if that effects the factory bumpers. Some aftermarket bumpers do not interchange.

This is kind of a concern. I'd hate to waste anyone's time.
I'm curious if anyone on here has swapped early 99 to late and if they ran into any problems....
If the bumpers are not skirted or armored how you would like.Take the time to weld some more bars, tread plate, expanded metal, ect and make them look like you want. Then have them powdered or do what I do,flat black or semi-gloss Rustoleum....Good luck.
Barry, Rustoleum makes this spray-on bedliner stuff that I have found is pretty tough. I sprayed the plastic parts of my bumper and my inner grill with it this summer and I like it. Its not super bumpy like rhino-line, its mostly smooth but not shiny...and still looks nice. If it sticks well to plastic, I don't see why it wouldn't work well on primered metal.
My wheels are matte black and I would like the bumpers to match.
Good deal Lisa,I was just wanting you to get them like you wanted them before painting.Several different builds on the replacements, you can add metal if needed.
Ole hell....I gust went back and read the top.Sorry,I was thinking replacement pipe bumpers not factory black.Should have read more closely...I was excited for ya.

There is also a bolt on each side on the inside as well. At least there was on mine.
Have a friend to help. These bumpers are not light, especially the rear.

10-4. Thanks. Death by bumper would be a bit embarassing.
When farmb0y hit a deer, we replaced his E'99 front bumper with one I "acquired" from "someplace" that was from a later model Super Duty and it fit fine. Shouldn't have any problems.
Well the deed is done! He's happy that he's getting a chrome bumper and grille, I'm happy (but frozen) and it was all free. Couldn't have met nicer people.
Sweet!!! Now you just need to cut some holes in and mount up some extra fog/driving lights, then get it painted up all shiny....
looks sweet for sure!!! You only got the front thought? What about a rear bumper?
EDIT - matte black to match your wheels is much better.
For the rear I did it by myself using a pair of jack stands to hold it up on either side. Put them in place so that when you're stocker comes loose, it drops right on to them. Then you know they're in exactly the right spot when it's time to put the new rear bumper on. Easy cheesey.
