DP Tuner?

Hi,
I am very interested in getting a tuner from Jody at DP-Tuner installed on my truck. My truck is pretty much stock. The only major work i've done is the head studs and will install a 4" turbo back exhaust before I get the tuner. I am a little new at this and have a few questions.

On their website, DP-Tuner, i see the SCT tuner can comes with the standard tunes and can hold up to 3 custom tunes. However, I have seen on the forum where people have stated you can get as many tunes as you want to pay for. So what hardware to have buy to do this? In short, what all do I need to get a nice set up here? SCT Tuner, switch ( for switching between tunes)..etc..
Currently I have an Edge chip and just want to keep the display to read EGT's, boost, RPM..just use it as a gauge.

Thanks, any information yall have on this set up would be greatly appreciated. No offense, I am only curious to hear input from those who are using this set up.

An SCT is different than a flip chip or your Edge.. You plug into the OBDII port and load the tunes to the PCM.. This is done with the engine off and takes a couple of minutes..The SCT programmer you're seeing will hold 3 custom tunes on it at a time, along with the canned tunes.. You keep any other tunes on your computer.. The tunes can be moved from computer to programmer very easily..I have a bunch of tunes and use two of them.. A tow tune and something a little more aggressive..

You don't have, nor want, shift on the fly with a 6.0l unless you have a manual transmission.. Shift on the fly is too hard on the transmission..

You don't want a switch on the fly setup with the 6.0, that actually does more harm then good in the long run. These engines and trannies need to be properly tuned and you can't do that with a shift on the fly setup.

Between that and getting an a/m intake for an engine that is just tuned are the two most common mistakes that people make with the 6.0. You can get away with that stuff on the 7.3, but not with the 6.0.

Thanks fellas!
That clears things up for me. I guess, if you want more tunes you can download your current ones to your computer, send the sct tuner back to Jody and get more..and so on. But can only get 3 at a time, correct?

Also, which tunes do yall recommend? I am not interested in getting too crazy with this as this is a fun/longevity decision for my truck. The #1 goal here mpg. How big of a performance difference is their b/w the 60 hp vs 80 hp econo tune?

Thanks

tunes are sent via e-mail.. you can get as many as he'll send, sent to your inbox.. load them to the SCT from the computer..

i don't know what Jody calls his 6.0 tunes..

towing at max GCVWR is usually a 40hp tune or so..

good street tunes are 80-100 hp..

One thing he will need is your vehicles "PCM strategy"..

When you receive the SCT it will only have canned tunes on it.. You will plug it in, follow the on-screen prompts, and retrieve the strategy code.. Send this to Jody and he'll write the custom tunes.. If you know someone who has an SCT, you can get the strategy now and Jody may load the custom tunes to the SCT for you..Then, when the SCT arrives, it'll be ready to go..

Sweet! That seems pretty simple. Sorry to stray off the topic, are yall using a 4" exhaust to prevent high EGTs associated with the tuning? Before I do any tuning I plan on getting a 4" turbo back exhaust. My only hesitation is that it may be too loud. How much louder does it make your truck? Can you tell a big difference on the inside of the vehicle?

Thanks again

A larger, turbo back exhaust, will help reduce EGT's...

A regular turbo back 4" exhaust with cat and muffler in place won't affect loudness all that much. Take out cat and/or muffler that will add to the noise level, how much will depend on what you remove.

I would stick with the 4" exhausts, if you go bigger then that at this level of the game it will actually be counter productive.

I can't believe I'm going to say this, but bigger isn't always better.

I was just looking at Jody's site.. Spend the $5 on the USB A-B cable.. You probably already have one(printer cable), but for $5 it's worth getting a dedicated cable for your tuner.. I keep one in my laptop bag all the time..

I saw 3 tune options.. Let Jody know what you want and what you have as far as mods.. Most of the time a tuner will turn it up a little more on a studded truck..

FWIW: With an SCT, once you have the hardware(programmer), you can have any 6.0 tuner send you files to run..
