hey guys
thanks for all the help the forum has already provided.
So I test drove a sharp 1996 F250 4x4 w/ the 460 7.5 L today. Seems like a really nice rig. Couple questions on things I noticed though.
1) when making a turn there was a steady "thunck, thunk, thunck" until the steering wheel was straightened. It this the steer box? how much to fix?...has newer tie rods and ball joints.
2) there was also a semi loud tick tick tick coming from around the serpentine belt. What could this be?
3) one side question. Any of you have this rig? what kind of mpg ya get. and can you fit a car seat in the back "half" bench? How do you all like th 460? there are 132k miles on it. but seemed clean.

Tie rods, ball joints, cupped tires, wheel bearings, pitman arm joints and steering box can all be cuplrits, as can a cracked frame where the steering box mounts.

Depends where the tick was coming from. Worn tensioners can tick, but so can alternators and air pumps if equipped.

You're going to get a mixed bag of responses, anywhere from 10mpg to about 15mpg. You can drive gentle enough to get decent mileage (decent being relative of course) but the 460, if used hard, is very thirsty just because it's quite big. The advantage is you can tow/haul a lot and still have plenty of power to accelerate.
The clunking while turning could simply be that the front hubs were locked, U-joints are not very smooth at the flex limit. The 460 won't deliver anything better than 8-10mpg city though it has the potential to deliver mid teens at moderate highway cruise speeds.
