I have a 400M extensive rebuild of heads alum. intake 4bb carb 600cfm new timming set plugs wires whole set of engine gaskets headers, dual exaust and everything I can think of.
Can you folks tell me what you think the timming should be. I set it for 6btdc. Is this too conservitive... I have had it as high as 14 .... Oh yah, I MSD 6a and new msd distrib. sparkplug gad is .50 seems much smother than when it was .42
I've got a '78 351M that I have never been able to get the thing to run at 'specs' without pinging under all conditions except idle. The only way I could time mine was to get it running, tie it to something solid with a chain and back off the timing as I accelerated it in gear. I've been told since then that timing was always a problem on the M's - could be wrong, but that's how I took care of mine.
Justin, I don't know where you live but if your above 3000 feet you have to kick up your timing.. I'm running my 400m at about 11 degrees but I'm at an altitude of about 3600 ft.. Good luck ..

Don;t we think this method to be a little risky. I don;t think I have the -----, will to tryit this way. P.S I live in LA... any sug. on just a preset timing location. 6-8btdc. thank you for your mesage though very fun to read.
on my stock 400m in a 78 4x4 is 12 degress BTDC. that is on the stat sticker on the valve cover. I know the truck was built in Cal. and was driven in that state for many years. Truck had a 5th wheel hitch the next owner used if for bedcamper. The truck has been in So. Dak. for almost 10yrs. Still has plenty of power and know pinging w/ that setting. Hope this info helps get you a starting point.
