leaking heater core

I've got a 1998 f150 w/ 4.6. The heater core starting leaking last week. I called the dealer and they want $1200 to fix it! I live in a warm climate and rarely ever use the heater. Could I just bypass the heater core by disconnecting the input and output hoses and connecting them together?

thanks

You could do that if you are sure you dont want heat. Replacing the heater core is mostly labor intensive. The core itself I suspect is cheap.
If you have the tools, patience, and a place to do it,I suggest you research just replacing it yourself.
