My 1997 1 ton dually flat deck has run a muck lately with quite a few problems due to high mileage. I found a 2003 1 ton crew for 10995 (CAN) and am wondering if I should put the money into fixing my old truck or get the slightly newer one? Its a 4x4 manual with a 6.0l I don't know anything about the 6.0l but I like the 7.3 my 1997 has.
I'd stay faaaaar away from the 03/04 6.0Ls... The 05-07s are supposedly better, but I have seen 05s & 06s with blown head gaskets, dead turbos, EGR problems, etc, etc, etc. If you head-stud & EGR delete a 6.0L, it will be better, but I'd hold out for the later version if I were you.
So what's wrong with yours now? I know where there's one for sale down here. Flat-bed dually 7.3, I *think* it a CC, but can't recall for sure. It's here in TX.

DEF get a FREE OASIS REPORT from any FORD DEALER
this will tell you what has been done to the engine/truck
some early 6.0 engines were OK, most were prone to issues as Ford and INT had not worked out all the kinks
I have to agree with everyone here and say: find a 02/03 7.3 much more reliable!
I have some injector problems and may need an engine rebuild. Most recently the AC clutch came apart on the hiway and the serpentine belt came apart. The flywheel may have a broken spring as well it makes a funny raddly noise when releasing the clutch. Shifter is sloppy and hard to get into gear. I need to spend a long week in TX where people have these trucks and work on them. I would like to keep this one but it is very hard to find parts and people that know them.
It is hard to talk about because I feel like a whiner! :-)

If you search FTE you'll find many threads in the 1999-2003 7.3L section and the 6.0 section from 2003/2004, highlighting the many trails and tribulations owners of those year built trucks had, be they 7.3 (2003) or 6.0 (2003-2004).
