Truck Trouble

Ok, So I have a 1984 Ford F-150. Its the inline six and it has the automatic overdrive transmission. I went out to start it a few days ago and it wouldn't turn over, instead i heard a a loud clicking noise from what i thought was a starter. so i swapped em out. Still have the same problem. My friend came over to check out what was goin on and he noticed the clicking was coming from above passenger side wheel well. I checked it out and figured it was the selenoid. So I swapped that out and i still have the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Bryan...welcome to the site. Here's a few questions that might help narrow this down.

First, what's the condition of the battery? Have you checked the charge level with a volt meter?

Second, what is the condition of the ground cable? Is it clean and firmly attached at the battery and to the engine?

Third, is the solenoid firmly attached to the fender? The solenoid grounds directly to the fender, so it needs to be tight....I usually sand the paint on the fender so that little bump out section on the back of the solenoid makes contact with bare metal.

And fourth, can you turn the engine by hand? Put a socket onto the vibration damper bolt and see if the engine itself moves.

Havnt checked the voltage on the battery, but i had it jumped every time i installed a new part (i think i left my gps on so the battery is dead) still nothing, i have thought about swapping out the battery but i figured i try to ask people who know more before i just go out and swap things out. The the battery and the cables seem clean and are in good cond. And the Solenoid is firmly attatched to the fender.

Oh and where is the vibration damper bolt?

The vibration damper bolt is in the middle of the crankshaft pulley, the one everything is driven off of.

I'd be willing to bet it's your battery. Make sure to also check your battery clamps, checking that they're tight and clean. Once, I had a loose clamp, and everything in my truck worked fine, but as soon as I turned the key to start, it all went dead. Tightened the clamp and I was back in business.

Thanks BryanE. I was having the same trouble with my 82 F100, the starter solenoid wasn't getting a proper ground on the fender.
