Rear End

I've got a '73 3/4 ton rear end under my truck. When I first put it under, it had a gear whine in it only going forward. I thought it might have been a limited slip so I nosed it into a dirt bank to see if both rear wheels would engage, they didn't, then I assumed it was a ring and pinion out of lash. Now I find out that when one rear wheel is off of the ground I cannot rotate it, as is possible with a dog leg rear. It doesn't matter which rear is up, if the other wheel is on the ground the one that's up will not rotate. Anybody have any idea what I've got here?

Hey , Its been awhile since I fussed with a rear end---- But i think you have lost a spider gear.

The Up wheel will rotate with spider gears.

Thanks JBH, it makes sense when you think about it, but as you may have guessed that's not exactly what I wanted to hear.
