My 94 F150 4WD has been riding rough for a couple months, veering suddenly to the side. Finally the front driver side axle broke at the ujoint but after replacing it the problem remains.
My guess is something has cracked or rusted so looking for advice where to look.
Honestly, you just have to get under there and look, there is no one part that causes "veering suddenly to the side."
You'll have to check ALL of the steering and suspension components, every place that two suspension or steering parts connect to any other part, including all of the frame brackets, nuts, bolts, bushings, frame rivets, etc. There aren't any short cuts on this one.
If the symptom is really that bad, the problem should be easy to find. I definitely wouldn't be driving the truck any more if it's acting that badly.
Thanks, I know you are right. I was just hoping there is some known spot for this or the fact that the driver side ujoint got the most abuse would narrow it down a bit.
I guess I need to put on stands and then use the jack to push on stuff to see where the flexing is taking place.
Put the front end up on jack stands and make sure it doesn't move a bit before you go yanking and banging under it. Having your truck fall on you would be pretty much a big bummer.
I just changed the axle out on Minnesota snow pack. Used two jacks and two jack stands and still wouldn't get under it. For this I'll probably get some railroad ties from home depot.
Check the section of frame rail on the drivers side where the steering gear is mounted. The frame could be cracked or rusted allowing the gear to move.

If u jack up the truck turn the steering wheel to full turn either direction and lock the hub, Then simply just spin the wheel and feel for binding. If u are having sticking steering, where it will not seem to turn then turn and dart off in the direction u want, its probably the problem
Yes--my truck was doing the same thing -- found seized u-joints in the front axles--replaced them and it went away---not a fun job outside in winter though !!!!
