I have a 85 bronco with a 351 ho engine. I am thinking of getting rid of the 4180 holly and replaceing it with a 1406 edelbrock. I would like some opinions on this. I have a bad flooding problem at the moment and there is a steady drip in the secondarys. I have done some research on the carb and seems to be complicated to rebuild and alot of emissions built in to try and overcome. All of the emissions are gone anyway and I dont need a emissions carb. Please post if you have real world experience on the matter. thanks.
One thing that will cause the problem you have now is dirt and rust in the fuel. This gets in the carb and makes the float needles stick, the fuel level in the carb gets too high, and the fuel drips into the engine.
So a new carb may fall victim to the same problem if dirt gets in it. If you do put a new carb on it, I would put a very good clear fuel filter inline before the carb. If you notice the fuel being brown or having little flakes of rust in it, your next project would be to replace the fuel tank. This is a common problem and a new tank is only little over $100.
I can testify to that. Thats the problem i am having with mine. There is lots of trash in the fuel filter and now my carb is running WAY rich. Finally a good excuse to replace that tired puney factory carb, and put in a tank that mounts behind the rear axle.
