Currently, I'm attempting to "maximize" a 300 straight six. I found an Offy 4-barrel intake and a cam in JC Whitney. Stock lift is .24 sumthin and the new cam's lift is .4 sumthin; other than replacing the valve springs and reworking the heads(3 angle valve job, etc) what other head-work am I looking at? 2nd Question: The '96 300 had dual exhaust (2 exhaust manifolds) does anyone know how these would bolt-up? Or should I just go with a header? 3rd Q: Ford retarded the timing 4 degrees after 1970 (from 6 deg BTDC to 10 deg BTDC) will changing timing back to 6 BTDC really have any effect?
for head work ensure you go with a good machine shop and have them to a complete head rebuild including valve guides.
The timing is going to be dictated by your choice of new cam.
I've often thought the newer dual manifolds off of the newer generation 300's would be an outstanding way to go. It seems that you would get much better breathing than even a set of headers.
There was a thread on this subject in the 61-79 mailing list several weeks ago. Those messages are archived and I understand they will soon be searchable. It seems that I remember someone saying that these will work.
