So today I got everything* I needed to do a quick fluid change on my tranny. I got the fluid drained from the pan (can't drop it to clean just yet). The fluid is dark red but does not smell burnt..just used. Got the impact gun out and zip zip and got the inline oil canister off...then...
I noticed the oil filter was a pleated filter not the TP roll I was expecting. hmmmm. Ok no big deal..everything looks pretty clean. Then I notice the o-ring..stretched out and definitely not going back on. D A M N IT! I forgot to get the o-ring. So I called the dealer and they don't have any...looks like I might have to drive a couple of hours to another city to get one (if the tranny shop doesn't have one). Oh well you live you learn! I'm not in that big of a hurry..I've got to do the starter tomorrow anyhow.
Oh and I think the smell of this fluid is making me sick.
Sounds like someone installed an aftermarket filter. Also you do not have to drop the pan and clean the internal filter. You should however have the tranny hot flushed. It's the only way to change the fluid in the torque converter. Cost me 133 at our dealer.
I'm not having it flushed yet. I don't know when it was serviced so I'm going to do a couple fluid changes the next few thousand miles first. Less shock to the system.
In the future get your filters from dieselfiltersonline.com There $13 each with oring made by NTZ the OFM supplier. The stinky trans fluid your using is Mercon SP Eventually you will be using Mercon LV which has a pleasant smell.

The Mercon SP is being phased out of supply as Mercon LV is taking it's place. The LV is a tested and proven replacement. It looks like Ford is working on using the new LV on many of their future transmissions, right now it's being used in the Torqshift's and the Focus.
