It appears that 1956 is the earliest that they went. I have a '54 F100, would the '56 manual be good enough? I know that the 6V/12V thing is a major difference, but would the '56 manual be valuable or should I just keep on the lookout for a '54?

It's too bad they don't have a picture of the manual. I'm not sure why the year would be of particular importance unless the design was modified or improved over the years.
I have a Ford-o-matic Shop Manual that I don't need or use. It was published in 1950. You are welcome to have it. Send me an e-mail with your address and I'll send it to you.
I have the Helms manuals for both my corvettes, they are ok but are loose leaf reprints of the originals and some of the pictures are on the poor side. julies got a better deal for ya.
I found the shop manual for my truck on that auction site for under 20 bucks
I bought mine from a sponsor of this website, Blue Oval Truck Parts. Priced reasonable and shipped fast. Everytime I get some new thing I'm going to have to work on myself, first thing I buy is the best manual possible. Boat camper bike, and now this old 52 truck. I dig all the old pictures and the way they word things in it, very different from now ! Good read.

Is this "Ford-o-matic" Shop Manual the same as a GM Chassis Service manual in that it has everything in it about that particular year? Drivetrain, electrical, servicing, troubleshooting, etc.? I am sure very little changed from 1950 to 1954, but I was just wanting to get something like I have for my other vehicles (1978 Cutlass Salon, 1988 Cutlass Supreme, 1983 Hurst/Olds Cutlass, etc.) Besides old Ford truck iron, I am into Oldsmobiles...
What you are looking for is the 1954 Ford Truck Shop Manual. You can find them new and used on E-bay. I found an original for my 1953 F-100, like new, for 20.00.
You'll need a 1953 Ford Truck Shop Manual AND the 1954 Suppliment, or a reprint of the 53 that includes the 54 suppliment. The 53 is the Base manual.
I would invest the $11 to also get a 54 Operators manual as it contains some info not found in the Shop Manual.
You might also consider getting a "1948-1956 Ford Truck Parts and Accessories Illustrations Catalog." All those neat exploded drawings we post, come from that one.
And the sales Brochures contain a lot of useful info, and are fun to read!
