Howdy
Alright, I'm looking for the cold, hard truth on a subject I've heard many opinions on. Is it really worth the effort to swap 351W heads onto a 302? Has anyone out there actually did it and felt a real increase in power? Or is it just a waste of time? The reason I ask is I have a chance to get a pair of 351W heads for free, and I have a fresh 302 they could go on. And if it is a worthwhile project, what else do I need to switch out, i.e. longer pushrods, diff. lifters, rocker arms, etc. Please help. Thanks Joe

Depends. The 1977 and later 351 heads are exactly the same as the 302s (except for bolt size). What year heads can you get ??? Might check www.vintage-mustang.com for additional info.
The 351 heads are a direct bolt on.They will breathe better as they have bigger ports and valves but they also have bigger combustion chambers so you will lose compression unless you either mill the heads (necessitating the use of shorter pushrods) or use flat top or pop up pistons. The best heads to use are from 69 or 70(C9AE or DOAE casting nos); they have smaller chambers.
