5.4 head removal

I have a 2000 5.4 with the notorious head gasket leak. Got some oil on the lower intake. Drivers side leaking more than passenger side. Not going to pay for the job and am going to do it myself with some help from my uncle. Just wondering if anyone has written a step by step or anything like that on the process? I know it's a pain but I'm gonna do it myself and save money. I'm going to wait until spring when I don't need the truck anymore for the snow so I can start the teardown and not have a deadline. Any tips would be great.

heads

i'm looking.

I pretty much could have pulled 5.4 3v heads.
Because i had to do everything, right down to pulling the heads.

I put in ford hot rod racing cams! Gave the 60's loop!

IT IS a big job, long process. You better have some mechanical ability

Timing IS CRITICAL! Wrong, you will bend valves

here is a start to pulling valve covers (its actually for lash adjusters)
But you will need to do all of that anyway
Removal
All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable (14301). For additional information, refer to Section 414-01 .

2. Remove the engine air cleaner and the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 .

3. Position the power steering fluid reservoir and bracket aside.

1. Remove the bolts.
2. Position the power steering fluid reservoir and bracket aside.
4. NOTE: 4.6L engine shown; 5.4L engine similar.
5. Remove the crankcase ventilation tube (6758) from the valve cover (6582).

Windsor engine (5.4L)
6. Remove the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube.

• Disconnect the two differential pressure feedback EGR sensor hoses.
• Disconnect the upper and lower EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube fittings.

All vehicles
7. Disconnect the LH fuel injector electrical connections.

8. Disconnect the LH ignition coil electrical connections.

9. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor (6B288).

10. Disconnect the LH radio interference capacitor.

11. Lift the engine control wiring harness (12B637) off of the valve cover studs.

12. NOTE: The intake manifold (9424) is removed for clarity.
NOTE: The bolts are part of the valve cover and should not be removed.
Remove the LH valve cover.
• Fully loosen the bolts and remove the valve cover.
• Inspect the valve cover gasket (6584) and clean the mating surface of the cylinder head (6049).

Installation
All vehicles
1. NOTE: If not secured within four minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or four minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in two places where the engine front cover (6019) meets the cylinder head.

2. Position the valve cover and the valve cover gasket on the cylinder head, and loosely install the bolts.

Romeo engine (4.6L)
3. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown.

Windsor engine (5.4L)

All vehicles
4. Position the engine control wiring harness onto the valve cover studs.
5. Connect the LH radio interference capacitor electrical connector.

6. Connect the CMP electrical connector.

7. Connect the LH ignition coil electrical connectors.

8. Connect the LH fuel injector electrical connectors.

Windsor engine (5.4L)
10. Install the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube.
• Tighten both fittings starting at the top in two stages.
 Stage 1: Hand-tighten.
 Stage 2: Tighten to 40-60 Nm (30-44 lb-ft).
• Connect the two differential pressure feedback EGR sensor hoses.

All vehicles
11. NOTE: 4.6L engine shown; 5.4L engine similar.
Connect the crankcase ventilation tube to the valve cover.

12. Install the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and air cleaner outlet tube (9B659). For additional information, refer to Section 303-12 .
13. Install the power steering fluid reservoir and bracket.

Because it is a 6 year old thread and the pictures have been removed from the original host or that host no longer exists.
