ok to start off ive been building this truck for about a year now. ive had it for 3 but it sat for 2. this truck is my baby and it will forever be my project. now my question is if i get a set of built dana 60s and im running a 44 inch bogger with figure around 500-600 horses, will the axles last or will i have premature failures?
I know that alot of people love the 14 bolts, but I'd throw a sterling 10.25 in it just to keep it a ford. Just my .02 though. Glad to hear your getting to work on your baby though, I know the feeling!
Yeah, put a Sterling 10.25 under it if anything, putting a Chevy axle under a Ford just seems stupid to me. Sterling is equal or better quality IMO so whats the point.
And I want to add something to what Ronzi said:
The D60 front would be the stronger axle if you had a D60 rear, but the front D60 would probably be the weaker axle if you upgraded to one tons. A sterling 10.25 will break a lot less then a D60 front if it ever does break.
Those rear axles are pretty tough, it kind of depends on how you drive it. Some people can go for years without breaking an axle on that setup, and some can go for days. But the next upgrade from a Dana 60 front and a Sterling 10.25 is 2.5 Ton Rockwells, which might be a bit more than you want.
Rockwells are something that i did consider. basically what i want as a finished product someday is a serious wheelin rig that i can still go cruise around town in every now and then, and im planning on running 4 links front and back so it wouldnt be that much extra fab time to go with the rockwells.
and im building a 545 stroker with edelbrock heads and an eagle rotating kit. then im gonna hopefully put a zf 5 speed behind it with a 203/205 doubler.
I smell smoked clutches coming your way...
Not to down talk you, but that will be your weak link.
545ci is alot of motor. Not very likely going to be street friendly...
If your going 4-link, its going to be the same fab time for a sterling and 60F as it will be for rocks...
You have the motor, you have the suspension...
I say rocks.
Your truck will not be street friendly the direction your going in your posts...
Finally someone got the name. lol. ya i have a buddy with a 79 chebby and its got about 500 horses and he goes through a clutch ever 8-9 months. maybe ill just leave the 390 and put some good heads on it that way its a bit more street friendly. because the one thing i dont want is a truck i have to trailer to go play. A real truck gets drove out to the fun and then drove home at the end of the day.
You could do a clutch upgrade...
I know pro uses a 4speed, put a 13" clutch on instead of the stock 11" i want to say, my numbers could be off though...
A real truck gets drove out to the fun and then drove home at the end of the day.
I've seen some kick *** rides that need trailering and I'd have to say they are about as 'real' as it gets. I'm building a truck on Rocks and 53's and I'll be damned if someone tells me its not a 'real' truck because I trailered it. I'd drive it on the street sometimes but insurance on a trailer is always cheaper than insurance for a vehicle that you may or may not run over someone in. Anyways, what I'm gettin' at is, why not build the ultimate high hp durable truck you described to begin with? You've obviously got the skills, tools and money to do it, even if you do have to trailer it sometimes.
Our CJ-5 makes it through everything we can find around here and is driven to & from the trails.
Between the 39.5's on beadlocks and the 587 gears, the white 69 Bronco will definately have to be trailered. Our new "hope its done by" date is March something or other.
Our CJ is pretty much stock with just enough lift to house 33 Super Swampers. And yes, we can go pretty much anywhere with it and many, many places larger trucks or even Jeeps can't go. I love that little thing.
I'd like to find a CJ one day. People like to get all crazy with their Jeeps but IMO a CJ with a 360 and manual trans on 35's locked rear and OX-Locker front would be UNbeatable. And if the axles didn't hold up.. D60's. Done.
