will this transfer case work?

well havent been here much lately, butt this POS truck just wont stop breaking. Blew the transfer case up about a month ago its been sitting since, im going away early tommorow morning to look at a transfer case, its out of a 99 F-350-is the transfer case different from year to year and from f-250 to f-350?
details- 1999
Transfer Case
Ford Truck F350 Super Duty-electric shft, AT,242586,4-AUTO,CLM
it has 150kmiles on it, its from the government salvage they have 2 different ones. This one is electric shift.
Its a $1000-cheapest for a rebuilt not installed is 2 grand.
Would this be a good choice as all mine had was 180kmiles and it blew up (i'll post pictures later, hole is huge)
We havent figured out why the old one blew but when we put the new one in (it didn't run out of oil)

As far as I know they were all the same from 99-06, even if the one you get is with the electronic shift, and yours had the lever on the floor, all you have to do is take the soleniod off the other one and move the handle over from your broken trans case.

The early ones had some internal lubing problems that were fixed in the later ones.

Kwikkordead went through this with his transfer case and used the upgraded parts in his rebuild.

They should, however, interchange from '99 and 2000. F-250 and 350 are same-o, same-o.

Thanks for posting the link, Pop.
Turboboost, just go buy the rebuild kit and fix it yourself.
The tow home from the top of Mt. Rainier was more expensive than the rebuild kit was.
It's easy really.
You'll need a spreader to get the case apart, but other than that it's just making sure everything is aligned and some circlip pliers.
I didn't even have to replace the output seal, and it is dry to this day.

Thanks for the link Pop, good read. Dan that really sounded like you had a time on that trip, the bad thing about it like you said, is that there where no noises or any indication that it was about to happen.

1) Define "blown"
2) Like Kwik said, tcases are pretty simple devices. And significantly less to rebuild then $1000. Last time I had to buy a replacement chain, it was less then $200

There really isnt anything in a tcase that requires a degree in rocket surgery. People just seem to be afraid to open them. And unless you have actually broken the housing, you surely do not need another case, unless your not willing to open it up.

In Post #1 he mentioned "hole is huge", so rebuilding may not be a good option for him.

I suspect the hole is what happens when the chain breaks and bunches up.

The purpose of my first post was to point out that later units may be a better replacement from a lube standpoint if they use better-designed parts.

Oh my. Totally missed that. Tried to give you reps for catching that, but Im in prison I guess. Thanks. Yes, thats actually exactly what happens when the chain either 1) breaks, bunches up, and trys to continue around the sprocket, or 2) on a case that doesnt have the extra room, when the chain gets loose, and jumps on the sprocket, busts out the case.

Not all cases dont have the extra room for the chain to jump a tooth on the sprockets. I know for a fact on my np 208 on my 1/2 ton chevy this was not an issue. But I have also seen the damage from one that does not have the extra room. A nv 231 from a dakota.
