I have a 94 f150 300 5spd i have 3.08s in the rear end right now i am looking to switch my ratio for something better to tow with does any one have any sugestions on what whould be best bet to switch to?
3.55 will give you a reasonable combo. You can tow 6000# fine at 55, but its a bit doggy.
If you plan on towing more a 3.73 for frequent hauling will be better, and a 4.11 for a truck that will see daily towing or heavier weights.
If all you need to tow is a 2000# boat or utility trailer your 3.08 and keeping it out of OD will be sufficent.
I have had a combined weight, (Trailer, load, and truck.) of 12,000# on a 3.55 rear and had no issues going 55. Though it definately feels the weight.
i have a boat that weighs close to 3000 pounds and tow it threw mountain roads but the truck is also my daily driver so if i went 373 im thinking my fuel mileage is going to suck and if i go 355 i dont no if ill be happy with that
3.73 is a great gear set and a safe bet. I wouldn't go any higher than 3.55 or lower than 3.73. If you hardly ever see highway and do a lot of work with your truck, 4.10 would be a good gear set too.
I have 31'' tires, 4.11 gear set. 60mph @ 2,200 rpm @ 16 mpg.
I would save your money and just leave it the way it is. It's a pretty decent setup for towing minor stuff but it will never be great for towing more than 5 or 6K#. That 5 speed is not very heavy duty and the first gear is way too high so your truck is never going to be a heavy hauler. If you need a heavy hauler buy a 3/4 ton and if you need a light hauler save your money and keep driving your truck the way it is. My 2 cents.
My 96 F150 300 had 2.73s with the M5OD, when it was 2wd. I broke the Mazda tranny and swapped in a ZF 5 speed and 3.55s... in the process of doing the 4wd conversion. With 32s, 3.55s, and the ZF I hauled my buddy's 88 Chev 1/2 ton RC LB (5000+lbs?) on my 20' car trailer (2500 lbs) down the road without too much trouble. I wouldn't want to do that every day with it, that's what my 84 F250 4x4 6.9 IDI, C6, 4.10s is for.
