They do look nice and I got them from a guy on Ebay. However, I had the hardest time getting them to seal so I threw my old valve covers on for the time being.

Do you think they were custom made or do the look like they came from a manufacturer?

Unknown cam

[COLOR=black][FONT=Verdana]After listening to the videos I am pretty sure I have a cam as well. When I bought the truck the muffler was trashed and it sounded horrible. I had 2 1/2 " "Slowmasters" LOL…. installed and it sounds just like the trucks in the vids. It hits a lick and sometimes i think its going to die on me between hits. Can a "slowmaster" 2 1/2 dual exhaust make a truck sound like it has a cam? I have had two mechanics and another truck enthusiast tell me it has to have a cam in it just from the sound.

Just a muffler will not make a truck sound like it has a high lift cam. A rough idle could be cause by a poorly tuned carb. I'm sure if you posted a video we could tell you for sure though.

Well I guess I have a cam!because right after I had the slowmasters installed I also had a new carb installed by the same shop. My old carb was so wore out I couldnt adjust it so I tossed it in the shop and told them to replace it and adjust it and it runs like a champ!! Last question. What advantages do I get from having a cam? I ask only because I bought this truck to be used as a truck. I placed 35s on it, 4" suspension lift, offroad bumper with a winch. I have no desire to race it, only use iit to haul firewood, go off road, and as my daily driver.

More duration on the cam lobes means the valves stay open longer. This allows for more fuel and air to enter the combustion chamber. More lift on the cam means the valves open further "out of the way" providing greater flow of the fuel/air mixture. More fuel/air and more flow theoretically means more power but only if the rest of the engine has parts to keep up with the added fuel/air. For example: spark plugs, coil, distributor, heads (size of vavles, valve springs), carb and intake. Sounds to me like you have a mild cam in a relatively stock engine which is fine because many of the '73 and up engines were "smog" engines that had retarded timing and specific cams to decrease emissions.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Everything else is stock so this must be the case. I once had an 88 5.0 stang with a cam that pulled out and I put high preformance valvecovers, shorty headers, DUI distrubutior, etc.. just for raceing on 1/8th track. She was sweet!! Sadly to say I had to go to Iraq and had to sell her so I never got to see what she would do. Thanks, I was just curious why a cam would be in a 78 4x4 F150? I mean its not like it was built for racing.

No prob! Everybody like more power, a big reason people put aftermarket cams in trucks is for towing or offroad. There are cams designed specifically for both applications.

I have a comp 230d .512 lift stick in my 302. Works well but the heads are holding her back and it's to much from them as well. I'll try to make a vid after new heads are on. I get valve float at 3k, so i haven't drove her in a while.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one out here chasing low end torque with my small block... I was actually kinda okay with it until I landed a '65 F100 with a 429 in it and shortly after bought a '79 F250 4x4 with a '71 460 in it. These trucks HAUL ***! Hence my new favorite phrase, "There's no replacement for displacement" These two stock big blocks absolutely roast my "mildly built" 351, at least on the bottom end. I haven't lined these trucks up to see how the big blocks perform against the Windsor at top end though. It could surprise me but I don't know. I DO know that my '79 spins 44's on the dry street with stock 4.10's just as fast as it spun 33's. The '65... its just stupid torquey. Anyways, moral of the story is, I'm taking the 429 out of the '65 and putting it in my '73 this summer! The '65 doesn't have power brakes or power steering so the big block will be better suited in my Ranger.
Engine is a 79 with stock crap heads.

I have a 73 F100 completley stock that will burn the tires down(73 cylinder heads are better). But when it comes to top end the 73 don't hold a candle to the 79.

After my 79 gets wound up there isnt much that I can't pass. A 302 screamin about 6,000rpm and 3.00 gears goes fast!!!lol. I have wrapped the speedometer all the way around and back to 15mph once and was still gaining speed but I let out cause I got scared, lol.

I love the power and torque of BBF's but when it comes to going fast and going fast for a extended period of time I believe in nothing but small block power.

I don't abuse my trucks usually I drive them around normally all the time and keep the speed limit and get passes by every car. But every now and then you get the urge to just flat out cut er loose.

I'm hopefully just getting new heads, these 289 heads have seen better days.
