I finally got it done! Did the Sky manufacturing reverse shackle kit in the front and a shackle flip in the rear. Got the D60 from a '91 F350 with a blown engine. Transfer case and tranny from a '93 F250 that was burnt. Here's before and after pics. Enjoy. I put up lots of build pics in my Gallery.
how much time did it take?
I was going to do the same to my '89 services truck but it looked like a project!
I do have a donor truck so I have all the parts, but my question was do I want to spend that much time working on the service truck and be with out a service truck!
It was indeed a project. Mind you, a shop with a door and heat would have helped. Working on it in -20 to -30 was a little rough. It's done though. If you have everything ready, you could do it in a couple days.
With the sky RSK, it was actually pretty easy. The only hard part was drilling all the holes. Some will say all the holes are already there. Only 2 of the 38 holes were in the right spots on mine. As for the sway bar, I left it off. I may bolt it up at some point, but I'd have to lengthen the vertical rods at the ends.
Did the factory Track bar fit?
I am interested in the shackle flip on th erear axle too.
I am doing a RSK also and going back with SD 350 springs. Already have the rear on but with the rfon RSK and longer springs I believe th erear of the truck will need to come up a bit more.
I was thinking shackle flip would give less axle wrap than adding blocks.
Neal, the Sky kit comes with a lowering bracket for the track bar. Bolted right up. I wouldn't really know about the axle wrap thing, but the guys on the 4x4 forum say this is way better than blocks. Some of them were doing the shackle flip so they could remove their blocks. I figured it must be worth the trouble. Pinion angle is much better this way than with blocks. The back will definitely have to come up a couple inches.
I wouldn't mind keeping the duals, but this ended up being cheaper and still gives me a nice long stride. Once the 3.54 gears come in for the front, I'll be switching back. Then maybe I'll consider duals again.
And thanks for the compliments. Getting the front driveshaft balanced tomorrow. Other than the fender flares, that's everything, I think......
What brackets did you use to do the rear shackle flip?
The only two pics I saw you have looks like you removed to old one and replaced it with a different one.
I spent some serious time looking at your pics. Thanks BTW for them.
Got any more?
My RSK is second from an unknown manufacturer so I don't have the track bar bracket drop.
How much was the trac-bar bracket lowered? I guess I still need one of those.
The trackbar bracket dropped about 3". Some of the guys on the 4x4 forum say you don't need the track bar after doing the RSK. I figured it couldn't hurt to have it. And it was no real trouble since I had the parts. Sorry, I was having trouble uploading pics. Stupid slow connection. I'll get some more of the shackle flip. I took the front mount off of the rear spring from my donor truck. I lined up the top rear bolt hole and hat to drill the others, but it gave my an easy starting point and gave me the shackle angle that I wanted. You're welcome for the pics, Neal. When I was searching online before starting this project I was having a heck of a time finding good pics. So I thought I'd post the stuff that I couldn't find and thought I would have needed or wanted. Next day off I'll post a bunch more.
I'll put in a vote for making it a dually again....I have a thing for trucks the factory never made like my D60 shod F250 Crew Cab, I almost bought a '94 idi turbo F350 Crew Cab Dually 4x4 conversion one time, but it was a flatbed and idi, so I didn't...if it had of been a PSD I would have jumped on it.
I am getting ready to RSK mine with SD springs all around, but I'm trying to come up with my own brackets so I don't lift it more than a few inches.
I have been looking for the perfect donor truck. Then I may have to schedule a little time over at Neal's when the weather warms up. That is if he will have me.
The coil to leaf changeover was the difficult part. Lots of grinding rivits and drilling new holes. Other than that, it wasn't too bad. I suppose the transmission/transfer case swap took a bit of time as well. I tend to forget that as I did that part 2 years ago. Perfect time to put in a SMF and new downpipe!
