does anyone know where the hidden vin # is on the frame of a 71 f-100. i think i have a problem. my tile and door match, but i sent off to ford for a cac report and the discription dosent match at all. i didnt believe them so i sent off for a report from kevin marti at marti auto works. same details.mine is 4x4 and short bed , ford discription is 2 wheel drive long bed. frame shows no sign of being shortened.also the four wheel drive stuff looks all original. any help would be appreciated.
I would look on the frame below the battery, might take a lot of cleaning to find. Also I have seen the vin stamp on the cab on the underside in tran. area or tunnel
tc Some good advice from Phil about look alikes. The vin is on the top right frame rail, between the firewall and rad support, a lot of times aroung the axle.
I would caution you a 29 yr. old truck, may not be as it was built. If you have a title, insurance, and tags, be happy.

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
Be careful, you may find what you're looking for. John is absolutely right! No matter what else you find, remember you bought the truck at a price agreeable to your budget at the time.
I had a problem trying to read my regular VIN and so did the motor vehicle department when I tried to change the registration. They had me clean off the top of the frame on both the right and left sides but just under the front of the cab. It was a messy job with little clearance but muriatic acid cleared away the rust. Had to use a mirror to read it but there it was on the right frame rail. Best yet was the inspector was satisfied that I hadn't stolen it from Mexico and brought it over the border even though the door plate matched most of the damaged regular VIN. They told me Ford wasn't consistent with placement of the hidden number.
I have consistently found a frame vin on the passenger side frame rail on the top portion just below the battery box maybe 6-8" back from the rad support. You usually have to push the inner fender flap away from the frame to see the numbers. Further, the rust issues as addressed make it hard to see. I have also heard that there is a vin stamp on the top of the frame rails in the area where the cab mounts that is next to impossible to find without a dental mirror. I haven't confirmed that with any frames myself.
You can also find a part number on the driver's side frame rail on the outer face up front. That is usually easy to see and may tell you whether or not you have a mix-matched cab and frame. Keep looking, but be careful what you wish for. It usually will come true!
