Collecting part for a rebuilt, And was looking at numbers on two diffrent sets of rods and pistons, One set is C1AEA on rod and 390 4V on piston and the other set is C6AE-C on rod and 390 2V on piston . And my ?? is one better than other. Thanks in advance on any info.
Acccording to the Steve Christ book, C1AE-A is a long rod (FE's have either a long rod or short rod) WT(grams):727-740 For:60-67 352, 68-76 360,64-77 330MD, 73-78 330HD.
C6AE-C Is a short rod for: 68-70 390,410,428(including GT's) 66-70 330HD,361,391 WT: 762-774
Long Rod length (center to center): 6.540"
Short Rod length : 6.480"
I would think that if your pistons are marked to be 390, that's what they are for. The 360 pistons are suppose to have a full skirt, the 390's a slipper skirt. It says that some 390's and 361 (not sure if early FE or FT) have flat-top pistons, others have dished or recessed pistons. I would wonder about the 390 pistons on the long rods (360?).
The long rods with bearing stamp 1967 came out of 68 360 2 barrel and the pistons where stamp 390 4V and the short rods came from a FE block bearing stamp 66 ford with 390 2V also both piston where fly cut for valve relieve. Trying to built motor to pull 30" fifth wheel. Not fast but strong. It still strange to pull motors apart and see that they are virgin blocks. But then again change my dome light in my 68 the other day and it had 1968 stamp on the brass. Thanks again for any input
