I have no problem being upfront with what has or hasn't been done to the truck!! I realize now i should have been more dilegent with the tran maint. As I am spot on on oil and other service items. I farm and i am on top of all mach. maint !! I guess I didn't think the tolerances were soo tight that tranny fluid change needed every 30,000!! I'll have to live with it!!! I will still say that 90,000 miles of towing would create more heat and break dn the fluid more quicklyn than very little towing in my mind.
Anyway I check fluid and it is a bit low so I will add tom. and change filter as at this point i have nothing to lose!! I must say the fluid looks good and has no burnt odor of any kind.
Thanks for the spirited posts guys!!!
I would do a full service includes dropping the pan, re-placing the internal filter and external filter. I am going to do a full service on mine when I hit 50,000, my last service was done at 32,000, only external filter and oil change.

The thing that you have to realize is that you bought yourself a major upkeep kind of "girl". Looks damn good, but "she" is moody and very particular and don't tell "her" to hold on, "she" isn't having any of that.
Just out curiosity what was your rig before this one?
Very funny! This truck has a fun factor but I'm starting to wonder a bout the maintinance involved for the next 80,000(injectors,coolers,tranny and so on) all which are very expensive to fix.
I traded an f-150 for the 6.0. i have a 93 250 with 5.8 with 150,000 on it that does all the dirty work. Been around diesel tractors my entire life but have never had one with 2000hrs on it have soo many issues. I guess what I'm saying is the truck is just such a high maintanence vehicle> And a fun one at that!!!
The manual states to drop the pan and replace the fluid at 30k .... AND it states that flushing it is acceptable also.
Just be aware that if the shop does not have a heated flush machine, you will not get all of the old fluid out. My experience is that most shops do NOT have a heated flush machine.
Don't feel too bad. My truck has 170K miles on it. I just bought it almost a year ago and am just now getting to replacing the fluid (don't know if it was serviced properly before I got it). I am worried once I do this the tranny is going to die but what are you going to do.. maintenance needs to be done. On the bright side it (truck as a whole) runs like a top.
my truck did the same thing a while back, i changed my fuel filters and the problem went away, i hope yours is this simple. nobody wants to replace a trans! good luck
Is 30,000 mile tranny change removing pan changing filter and filling with new fluid or the flushing of transmission to completely change all fluid?
You do not have to change or clean the internal filter unless rebuilding the tranny. Ext. filter and fluid should be every 30,000 miles. I do the ext. every 10 to 15 for peace of mind. I had mine hot flushed at 30,000 and maybe it was my imagination but it seemed like she was shifting a little tighter afterwards.
I did the internal filter ,, it is a screen and could be cleaned ,, or for 23 bucks get a new one ,, the external is the real deal at 50 ish ..
but this tranny is goofy and has( EDIT I just read bismic's post .. spot on ) a bypass circuit that makes the home flush or complete fluid change very tough

How true ! High maintenance Gal ,, But I I do love her ..
my old F150 at 50,000 miles was doing what you described...ended up lasting me a few months then did it everytime I drove it and just kept getting worse and worse...didn't have the $$ to even get it looked at when it started doing it so I just babied it till I got the cash for a rebuild because I had a feeling that would be the outcome.
when the shop fixed it they said the torque converter was bad and when it went it sent a bunch of junk into the trans. ended up getting a new converter and a trans rebuild. not sure if this is your case, just sounded very familar! good luck to you!
What does everyone find to be the price for trans flush?
150 to 200 .. it isn't as lame as it sounds ,, it should include a new ext filter and a complete fluid swap usinfg a machine that heats the new fluid and swaps it out as the truck runs with the old fluid
