I blew a power steering line the other day, and my shop is about 20 miles from my house. Think i can drive it over there dry without ruining my pump? Its just too cold here to fix in the driveway, and all my tools are at my shop.
the Hpressure line is not no 10 minute job.
I threw wrenches and cussed and kicked thing. That was probably the hardest job i've done on my truck.
Getting that thing to line up on the pump was such a pain.
You gotta take the tire off and go in from the fenderwall. its the easiest way to do it. My hands are big, so it made it harder.
Just enough room to get both in there, but not much to turn a wrench
Put some oil in it and drive it the 10 miles. I drove my 25 miles after it blew, i had to get home.
Just went threw this a few weeks ago.
10 minute job for sure, even in the Autozone parking lot.
BUT I have a late '97 and nobody carries the line with the o-ring on it. All the other early ones are in stock with just the flare, but they used a flare AND o-ring from 8/11/97 - Jan '98 or something stupid like that.
So I ordered the correct hose and drove mine about 6 miles home.
If it happened again in the winter, I'd take the serpentine belt off and just drive home that way. My truck never warms up anyway, and if you see it warming up, pull over and put the belt back on for the remainder of the trip.
You'll risk burning up the ps pump with the belt on but you can get home w/o power steering.
Greeeaattt!!! I get to look forward to this tomorrow..One thing after another! Oh well, i knew it was gonna be like this...I bought a 13 year old truck. I dont know much about the power steering set up on these, but i will tomorrow. Im going to make sure theres some oil in it and drive it. Ill snowmboile in 10 degrees, but i wont turn wrenches.
Once the hose is back on, fill the ps reservoir and start the truck. Don't rev it up just let it idle and work the wheel back and forth a couple hundred times (well, maybe less )
Mine groaned for a while and I was sure I blew it up, but once the air got out of the system it quieted down and has been fine ever since.
just put the hard line on the ps box first ,I went through the front wheel with the tire on .then put the other end on the pump.mine was very easy ,hope yours goes well
yea. the one on the PS box is a beotch, but once its lined up it is easy.
I put liquid teflon on both of mine, but i dont think you have too.
I've had them leak to often on other trucks.
if you have a second pair of hands to help move the PS line around while you line it up, it will be a big help. I did mine out in the rain with a bucket light at 9 at night.
I had to take the tire off because I coudlnt' get to the damn wheel well with 33's stuck under there.
Once i got that line on the box, I cheered and drank 2 beers and went back out and connected the rest and filled it up.
And like jim said, fill it up good and turn the wheel back and fourth at idle 2 or 3 times, then check the pump again to make sure its full. Which it wont be, so you'll have to top it off where it belongs.
mine took me about 10 minutes as well. with the tire on(turned to the left to lock) and through the fender well. worked very well. i drove mine about 8 miles to get home from my brothers wreck. mine blew when i was trying to get outta the freaking mud to leave the scene of my brothers wreck... stupid 2wd!!! i finally got out though(in 5th gear, 2700 rpm, speedo pegged out in the mud barely moving. slung mud a long way behind me though!!! haha.
