Poor running V10

I have a 99 V10 automatic in my F250SD 4X4 took a trip from PA to Sc a few days ago running intersate speeds between 65 and 70 my fuel milage was around 12-12.5 mpg going down to SC, on the way back I was towing about 5000lb my mileage dropped to 7.25 I was was running at 60-62 mph with the tow haul/button on so my rpms was in the range of around 3200. Where the running poor comes in to play when I hit some of the hilly areas the truck would almost die, it didnt respond to throttle and rpms dropped off, let off the throttle and reapply and still didnt respond, if I did drop it down a gear to (2nd) it did respond. Also every now and then even while not towing I noticed the truck would lunge or miss a few beats then be fine. AutoZone did a scan but no misfires shown, the only code was for an O2 sensor on passenger side (I think it was the front one). Does anyone have any suggestions ?

TIA
Jeff

Change out the o2 sensor, thats sounds like that could be the problem. Try posting in the V10 section there are some really sharp guys that hang out in there!

You check your fuel pressure? You check that your cat is not clogged?

I just bought the truck about 2 months ago , I did do some minor maint. so far but havent cleaned the maf , the air filter is new. I just picked up a haynes manual today. Is it possible to change fuel filter without a special tool to remove the lines ? Any minor things that I should do let me know.

thanks again
Jeff

Didn't think about the fuel filter but for sure it's a good idea to replace it. You need the fuel disconnect tool but you can pick one up at any of the auto parts store pretty cheap.

Man if you lived in Texas I'd definitely help you to get that V10 running right, free of charge all you have to do is buy the parts....

I've already worked on a few Tritons and all they need is a little love and they'll give some right back 100 fold...

Some Seafoam, a fuel filter change, changing that O2 sensor, and a MAF cleaning should bring your truck back up to par and then some...

If the plugs haven't been changed, I'd do those too...

While you have the air intake off to clean the MAF, also look at the throttle body. Mine was dirty, and after I removed it and cleaned it I seemed to get a better response with the go pedal.
If you do think that you have a missfire, the truck doesn't always trip a code, especially when just starting to go out. To diagnose this, fill a spray bottle with bit of vinegar water and while enigne running spray around the cops and then read codes again. If one is near going out, this should help to point out which one right quick.
