i am replacing it because the bearings dropped out of it, also its not power steering.
Are there any kits to get new bearings or should i just get a new column
There are two bearings used in the steering column. One is hand pressed into the upper flange, a plastic ring keeps it in place.
One is at the bottom of the steering column pressed by hand into a retainer.
The upper bearing cannot fall out, the lower bearing's retainer could have cracked apart, allowing pieces of it to fall out.
The upper & lower bearings are the same: C3DZ3517A and are still available from Ford (@ $3.97 each) as they fit myriad car/truck applications from 1957 thru 1979.
The lower bearing retainer is obsolete, but can be found at Ford Dealers & obsolete parts vendors:
Jowilker, do I understand correctly, any 65-79 with power steering will work? I'm trying to put an automatic column in a '67 with power steering. Didn't know until reading this thread what the difference was between a Bendix and Ford. I'll look at the P/S to see if there's a marking on the gearbox. Thanks and hope to hear back.
No, The column length is different. The Bendix gear column is closer to the length of non-power. The Ford gear has hydraulic lines on top of the gear making the column about 2 1/2" shorter.
Bill can offer correct, but I believe the Bendix gear has 4 bolts on top while the Ford had 2.
