i dont own on of these. but here in a couple months ill be looking into buying a newer truck. i need soemthing more reliable then my 84
i was wondering how hard woudl it be to stick a 99-03 sick speed into one of these? is it not the same block? i say this cuz i like these motor with the less computers in them, and i really want a 6speed on a 5. plus i can still buy a 97, 99 tranny and a new clutch and still be aroudn 2g under the price of a cheap 99-03
A ZF6 has low, 1,2,3,4, and overdrive. I count six speeds.
If it isn't truly a six speed, why is low singled out as a fake gear? Why not discriminate against overdrive, too? It doesn't show up on the shift **** as a number, either. So does that make it a true four speed?
Another way to look at it is a one speed direct drive transmission with four underdrives and one overdrive. Where does this stop?
i dont think u guys understand wut im talking about
i want to take teh 5speed out of a 97 and throw in a 99-03 tranny and a new clutch
now will the tranny bolt into the block (if im not mistakin its the same motor with out all the computers) i know if i wanted to bolt a 6speed to my 84. we know we have to get a step plate so the holes can line up... and that the spline of the 99-03 tranny is bigger and that input shaft is longer then the 84...
does the 97 and the 99-03 tranny have difference liek this ????
The bell housing will mate up. The problem is the greater diameter of the transmission body. It will run into the hump on the older trucks. You'll either have to modify the hump or do a body life.
Another route is to put a a NV5600 6 speed. It will fit, but is a very expensive transmission to buy now because it's not only used for the Fords, but the Cummins guys buy it because it's a bolt in upgrade for their 5 speed trucks.

Yes I can count quite well and i know that there are six forward gears but what i meant by its not a true 6 speed is that you are rarely ever find yourself in a situation that you need low range. I run an F-550 tow truck for work and it will handle more weight than any OBS will dream of and I've never used low range. So no i do not consider a ZF6 a six speed, i consider it a 5 speed with low range.
[quote=dieselkid;8350218]no no i dont care if it truly a 5 or a 6 speed

it is the same motor and same computers. they are both electronically controlled. many of the parts are interchangable. the extra work swapping the trannies would be a waste in my opinion. i had a 95 460 with the zf5 and these are geared so low anyway. most of the time i started out in 2nd. ive had both a 2000 super duty and i now have a 96 f 350 and if you can get your hands on a super duty do it. they are nicer in my opinion and its the same motor except the new ones have some more of the bugs worked out of them- larger injectors, larger turbo, etc
