Looking for some insight

Ok folks, this is a fairly small issue but I'm still pretty pissed.

In Nov 2008 I bought a pair of 6" waterproof insulated postal shoes from my uniform vendor. My annual uniform allowance of $328.00 was all used up so I bought them with my money for $119.00. No biggy, they are nice shoes.

Come January of 2009, the sole of the right shoe split right across the ball of my foot. I was able to replace them under warranty for free and I was told that the replacements would not be covered under warranty should also fail. Well, not too much I can do about that.

The new shoes sat in box from February till November 2009 unused. I broke them out when it started to get cold and rainy. I have used the new ones for exactly 2 months and now the leather is separating from the rubber sole already.

This manufacturer makes all kinds of postal shoes and I wear thier low cut shoes in the summer and have never had any issues. It just seems to be the insulated/ water proof shoes that are problematic.

Should I complain to the manufacturer and hope for the best? Should I suck it up and buy another pair from another shoe maker?

Thanks,

Tim

Am I reading this right? It sounds like they told you to expect them to fail?

Personally, I'd try a different brand. Good luck!

I'd send them a letter.

I'd also look into another brand of shoes if possible.

LL BEAN warranties their boots for life.

For the last 10 years, I rotate 3 pairs of hiking boots. One of them being beans.... The beans sole split away from the boot, I wrote a letter, sent in the boots and a few weeks later a brand new pair showed up.

I'm wondering.. Is there a "postal forum"? maybe other postal workers have had this problem?

I love thier products but I can't use them for work as they have to be US/SRA rated and postal approved for my protection if I slip and get hurt. I can wear what ever I want, but it's at my own risk.

At this point, I'd start calling customer service. If they don't do anything, you could try a shoe repair shop. I've had a shop repair boots before when the soles started coming off, and the repair outlasted the boots. This was after I had tried to glue it myself.

"US/SRA rated and postal approved "

Look for military and police boot suppliers online and inquire if their products are approved.

I would complain, complain, complain (don't yell though and always be really nice). If they are a good company they will remedy the problem. If they don't then don't buy from them again and make sure you let them know, in a nice way of course. My grandma always told me "The nicer you are the more you will get in life."

Tim, I wear and swear by Rocky Boots and Danners. I'm in a similar situation with regard to what they want us to wear and have had absolutely zero problems out of either of these boots. Been wearing the Rockies for 16 years now and have never had a problem with soles splitting, leather separating from the soles, etc. Danners....same success.

Agree on the Rocky, haven't tried the Danners (I'm still using up my "career worth" of combat boots since they fit, are protective, and there's no reason to wear anything else).
I've gotten two years out of my current pair and I walk on a concrete floor all day.
I threw out the stock insoles and use Dr Scholl's gel insoles instead.

I agree, the Rockies are a fantastic shoe and I've worn them before as a letter carrier. However, the Thorogood shoes are a lighter shoe and when walking 10-12 miles per day, a few ounces makes a heap of difference.

Rockie also makes a waterproof insulated 6" boot for postal service, I'll most likely wear them in the winter months and the Thorogoods in the summer time. But, if the Wienbrenner shoe company succeeds in really pi$$ing me off, I'll discontinue the Thorogoods altogether simply out of spite and move back into the Rockies.

I crafted a very polite and professional email this morning to thier customer service manager.

There are 32 carriers in my station waiting to see how this will play out.

I had a pair of Red Wing logger boots and the sole seperated from the upper. I took them to my Red Wing dealer and they repaired them. No charge, no questions asked.
