I just returned to Louisiana from LA towing a small trailer. On hills (longer grades) at 70 mph.............. or so. The oil temp would reach 210 and the coolant temp was at 190 maybe for a couple of mins or so. most of the trip the oil ran 7 to 10 higher. I have 100k on the scurge. I am thinking that sooner or later I will need to replace the oil cooler. It does not look like a big deal to replace the factory cooler. My question, (do you feel like you have been talking to my wife at this point?) I have been reading about Neal Tech's oil cooler. Does anyone here use it or are they familiar with it? It is a much more in-depth install but I like the idea of removing the oil from the coolant path.
I would keep an eye on both temps in the near future. The rule is no more then a 15 degree difference between both. the 7-10 difference is well within the limit. Check it when your not towing, I normally have on more then 5 degrees between both after it's up to operating temp.
Wow...Neal Tech's oil cooler is really expensive (like $1800-$2200) dollars compared to an oil cooler overhaul kit ($180 ebay - $300 dealer). If you are going in to overhaul your oil cooler, you might think about hot-washing your intake manifold, deleting the egr cooler, adding a coolant filter (incidently the best mod to protect the oil cooler from grime), a ccv filter to re-route or pre-clean dirty air going into your intake/CAC tubes, and turbo.
It is very $$$$.
But, I like the truck so If I am in there any way.............
Your point is well taken though. Over haul the factory cooler and add a filter is much cheaper.
I have already plugged the EGR hole and have a home made sneaky pipe. I will remove the EGR cooler completely when I do the Oil cooler. SCT helps with a tune so that I get no lights.
I have also routed the CVV to air, and gutted the kitty. My oil is cleaner now at 5K than my gas motor is at 3k.
Love the car. I think I will go as you stated. Thanks!
Watch your oil and coolant temps when you first start driving (empty). I noticed with a healthy oil cooler the oil temp will trail the coolant temp by about 30 degrees until operating temps have been met. Then the oil and coolant temps are about the same (mine around 190 in the winter). While pulling a trailer the oil temp will be higher than the coolant temp (from my experience too). The last time my oil cooler went south I noticed the oil and coolant temps rising at the same temps while the engine was warming up. I have the oil temp sender in the cap of the oil filter housing and the coolant sender in the side of the block. Just found this on ebay Oil Cooler
As you stated, the oil trails the coolant untill everything is warmed up. Then my Oil stays at about 5 higher, until I load it down and climb a long hill, then I can get it to about 15 higher. On a long (10 mile) 5% grade keeping it at 70, i was able to see 20.
In a sick way, I was hoping that my Oil cooler was needing changing because I am at 100 k and need to change the coolant.
