Hi everyone,I have a 96 F350 crewcab with the 7.3 ps and E4OD.The tranny piled up about six months back(torque converter actually) so I pulled it out and put in a rebuild kit myself along with a new converter. It worked perfectly for a couple months after getting it back on the road but for about the last month reverse has been intermittent, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.When it goes into reverse it seems perfectly normal, engages quickly and firmly and doesn't feel like it is slipping. When it doesn't work it is just like it is still in neutral, just won't engage at all. Most of the time it is good when it is cold and won't go in after it is warmed up but there has been at least once that it wouldn't engage after sitting for several days and being completely cold and a number of times when it is completely warmed up and still went into reverse so I am not sure whether it is heat related or just been coincidence that it happens most when hot. All of the forward gears work just as they should. Anyone know if the fluid level being off could cause this as the dipstick tube got somewhat bent up during the re&re so I am not sure if the dipstick is reading accurately but it seemed to take more fluid then the specs said to fill it after the rebuild?Any suggestions?
good one for the former tech engineer. I am S.O.L.
I purchased a 1997 F350 Centurion conversion drw with the 7.3 powerstroke and E4OD. My boss pulled 35000 lb machine tool (VTL)
from Texas to here in Ohio, when the next day the tranny went out. He had it built by a good builder and it just shifted all over the place and burned the forward clutches out of it. He built it 3 more times trying to chase the problem, when finally he bought a computer for the truck which was a reprogrammed one from Ford. Still didn't fix it. He even took the entire valvebody assembly off another tranny that was in good condition and was a deisel tranny. Still not fixed. Bought Superchips Ford MaxTuner just for sheyahts and giggles and fried the intermediate clutches. He gave up and it sat for awhile.
Since then I bought it and pulled it to build it carefully paying attention do detail. I found the forward 6pinion planetary didn't have the inner needle bearing that sits against the sunshell gear, all the regulator valves in th accum. valvebody were stuck, and it had a ninth checkball in the case about an inch to the left of the manual valve far rear. I built it to spec with the addition to Superiors shift correction kit which is replacement of springs in the acc. Body and pump mods. Put it back in the truck and it worked great for about 20 miles and then my coolant guage to the engine flickered then I lost all forward gears all at once. I had to pull it down
Into low 1 to get it back to my shop and it barely made it. Mind you there were no codes during or before the last builds. After 4 builds and 3 grand I'm at wits end.
I had a bronco with the e4od and if i remenber correcaly reverse was intermittin it ended up being that the trans filter sliped down sence there is no bolt that holdes it on. so I bought a clip off the internet that was made to hold the filter inplace and that fixed the problem. good luck.
