Limited slip ideas
Thanks, Ryan
I recently "geared up" also to compensate for 35" tires and had them add an Eaton LSD (previously nothing) and have been very happy with it in the snow and gravel.
My off roading is probably very limited compared to others, but after almost getting stuck in snow covered sand far from civilization and help (and before LSD) it seemed like a good idea. And it has been.
The arb air lockers, that way they can add to the front axle also, or just going with the detroit true trac for the rear. The true trac is a limited slip, and after install you virtually forget it is there. The air lockers you will have to engage/disengage as needed.
I opted for the true trac and have enjoyed its benefits, and have really not encountered the extra spin issues that some report having while in the snow.
Thanks, Ryan
When I had my gears changed to 4.30's...I too faced the decision of upgrading to LS as I did not have one on my Ex.
Choices were Eaton, Auburn and OEM (Sterling). The problem for me was that it was going to run an additional $450 to $650 for these (OEM being cheapest and Auburn being most). I simply couldn't justify it for me to spend that much more given I drive a 4x4 and if I have an issue with rear slippage...I can simply flip a switch on the dash and engage a new axle ~13' from the rear that is slipping...
So in the end...I opted to stick with my non-LS rear end. So if you look at the gear charts for our trucks...all Ex's that came with 4.30's from the factory have a code of C3 which is 4.30 LS. Mine is a 33 which was only offered in F250/350's but works just fine in my Ex.
Just my thought process that I fought in March of 2007 that you are now going thru yourself.
Good luck...I know it is not an easy decision...BTW...to this day I have yet to regret this decision and I have even off-roaded on the outer banks of NC shores and had no isuses.
Joe.
