Hi everyone!
My problem is this I have a 302 that I got for a 250$ song I spent this morning givin it a one and twice over. I pulled the pan o find out that the main barringcap one of them in the middle was missing a bolt. What to do? tryand return it? Instal the new bolt? What if it is stripped. Big problems... Any advice would be much apr.
Is this supposed to be a used running engine? Rebuilder? Reman? I would talk with the seller and see what he/she has to say. Something ain't right, here. There might be more missing parts. If you're going to keep it, I would disassemble the engine and look everything over really well before doing anything with it. If you pull the other main bolt and remove the cap, you'll be able to check the condition of the threads, and I'd take a good look at the bearings. But like I said earlier, it depends on how the motor was sold. Running, rebuilder, or otherwise. Good luck!
Well I got the engine as a stripped rebuild. I found out to day that the main cap bolt that is missing is to hold in the oil pump asembly or something to that extent. The pump was removed and the bolt went with it as this engine was used for parts. I.E the oil pump oil pan and the timming cover. But the gut were left untouched. Is one of the main cap bolt holt down more than the cap itself. I am now more concerned that it was sleved. Does this take away from the overall strength. I know that this was a full and well done rebuild. I think that they did a very good job, but does this make the engine weaker. Only one clynder was sleeved.
Thank you all. This baord is at times my only lifeline in working on my cars.
O.K., I haven't been into a lot of engines but:
After tearing down my 302 last August, I don't remember that any of the main cap bolts held down anything but main cap. After giving my Small block rebuild book a study, I don't see the main cap bolts holding anything more than Main caps. The oil pump is held in place by it's own bolts. This engine sounds a little fishy to me.
I'll agree with BBT about the oil pump. Seems to me they are mounted near the oil pan rail, not off a main cap. Mabye the oil pump pickup tube had a tab that was bolted to a main cap?
As far as sleeves go, if the block has been sleeved, the sleeved cylinder should be just as strong as the rest of them.
The missing bolt was used to support the longer oil pick-up tube used on later engines. This bolt has a small stud protruding from the center of the head (3/8"NC if I remember right). If you are going to use an earlier front-sump truck pan, I'd suggest installing a grade 8 (has six "stars" on the head) bolt like what's in the other main caps.
As for sleeved engines, most people say they're OK - as long as the machine shop fitted the sleeve properly. Personally, I don't like them.
