The 38-42 figure was for basically a stock engine with the numbers going down as compression increased.

If Basby is running 10:1 (which one poster said) 45 degrees total seems highly unlikely. The higher duration cams used a higher static timing, which is why welding up the slots or using smaller plates is the usual modification. So while 15* initial isn't out of the question adding 30 more seems unlikely to me, but I've been wrong before.
I totally agree and thats what I said. Should be more like 32-36, but I still didn't find his ratio, just yours. My last post was for him, I should have quoted.

i AM RIGHT AROUND 10:1, My truck should be pinging its a$$ off with the advance I'm running, but it doesnt. Thats why I think I may have something else going on, just not sure what it could be. I've only got 6-8 k on the motor since the rebuild. For cam timing I bought the earlier (70 or so) timing chain set and just lined up the marks, didnt check it w/ a degree wheel

I misunderstood. I'm sure he's running less than 10:1 probably 1/2 to 1 point less. Still find it hard to believe 45 degrees.

Typed this out and got sidetracked. So I didn't see the above until I posted.

Stock 70 compression was 9.5:1 so you're not radical. Cams are ground diff and come with a card w/specs. Only true way to tell is degree them. The new cam I just had put in "should" have been set +4 but wound up setting it at zero after degreeing. I'm no builder, I leave that to my trusted machine shop. Mine might blow the first time I crank it. Hope to find out this weekend. I've been told many times to set my timing where I want it at all in and let the initial fall where it may be. I wouldn't get overly concerned with numbers. But just my opinion.
