Transfer case

Hey everyone. I have a question.

On my 4x4 6.0 I went to change the transfer cases fluid.
I was told at the parts store to just fill them to the fill hole and when it quits running out the fill hole, put the cap on it.

The manual just says to put a certain amount in the front and rear.

The auto parts guys said to fill it to the top. So that I did. Is that ok?? Is there such thing of overfilling a transfer case in the front and rear??

Thanks for the replies!!!

I filled mine to the overflow level - even though it was more than what the manual recommended. I have had no problems. I do not think either approach is bad - they would both be fine.

Are you referring to the transfer case or the differentials? I'm confused by the reference to front and rear.

Follows is a link to a tech article on transfer case fluid change procedure:

Ok I do have another question.......what or when would a differential fail if not enough oil got in there?

Would it go a mile or 5 thousand? Will it lock up?

the reason i ask is i am pretty sure i filled it up in the front. Everytime I take the truck out, when I get home i smell a little bit of burnt oil. I didnt know if filling it to the hole makes the oil come out the vent or if its too low, it will make a burning oil smell?

Depends on the amount of oil in the transfer case, the gears will melt, and then probably lock up.
