gas tank differences

I have a leaky rear tank on my 73 F100. I have found a 79 to take a tank off of. But it was brought to my attention that the fill hose and vent hose are different. On one it the vent is to the front and the other it is to the rear. Is this true? What year did they do this change? Was it when Ford went to fuel doors on the fenders? Thanks for your input.

I have a catalog you can get a new exact replacement tank from for $76.95 shipping & handling. It lists two different tanks. One with a emission hole, one without emission hole. It shows 73-79 with emission hole,73-78 without e/hole. The one your looking at may fit then. The catalog I mention is National Automotive Lines, Inc. Phone# 1-800-428-4300. They will also send you a free catalog if you call and ask. They have gas tanks and straps for alot of different vehicles. I've used there tanks and they are good quality tanks. They are the same brand J.C.Whitney sells. They have tons of parts in there catalog. If you don't need the tank its worth a call just for the free catalog. I've had the tank's at my house within 4 days after mailing my order. They are in Shelbyville,Indiana

The difference is an emissions vs non emissions tank. The emissions tank has the filler and vent tube reversed, as well as a hole in the top for a fitting to the carbon cannister. I temporarly installed an emissions tank on my '77 non emissions truck. If the vent tube is long enough it will connect up, but the pipes will be crossed and may restrict the flow of fuel into the tank. You'll also have to block off the hole in the top of the tank somehow. The price listed in the post above is very good by the way. The cheapest I've seen is $99.00 on sale.

The info about emission control and non emission control tanks is correct. You can get a 38 gallon replacement tank from JC Whitney for about $250, or you can install a full size (78 or 79) Bronco tank which holds 33 gallons for $150. A stock 19 gallon replacement tank is $120. All prices are JC Whitney regular prices but they have frequent sales.
If you have any questions about installing non stock tanks...e-mail me at wnelson@ptialaska.net
and I will tell you how I did it.

Just my spin on things, but I'd use the '79 tank and cap off everything except the pickup out of the tank.
