Good evening Ford lovers! For Bubba wanting to know of some good companies that supply timing chains here is a list with some part #s. Edelbrock has a good set part# 7281 which you should be able to order at any speed shop for around $60 US. Im not sure of the pricing in the states , Im in ONT CANADA and i get them for 90-120 $ . Summit racing also has some selections from different companies that are reasonable. Their # is 1 800 230 3030 Good luck
I have owned many Ford trucks over the years from a 240 inch six to a 460 4bbl and they all got 10 to 12 mpg. The guy who goes 100 miles on a quarter tank of gas probably has a 44 gallon (after market) tank installed or is.... uh.... lying.
Bill at Hardcore, thanx for the info man. Will order a set and put them to good use. This truck will be used for a lot of hauling and towing, so I'm hoping this will be a good set up. From the way you talk of it, it sounds pretty good to me. Thanx again.
Sameo..had a '78 351m and only got 8mpg emtpy or loaded. Now with my '77 460 2x2 I still get between 8 and 10mpg. I think you just gotta accept it. The 400 that everyone seems to talk about is that the 400 windsor? Had a 72 wagon that I bought new back then and it had the 400. Couldn't keep the thing tuned up to save your whatever. I still have the original shop manuals for the 72 if anyone is interested.
I'm in the 10 mpg club, too. I have a 78 F-150 4x4, 351M, C-6, 3.50 gears, 31X10.50 tires. The engine I replaced had 130,000 miles on it. I usually got about 6 or 7 in town, maybe 9 if I'm lucky. The new engine has maybe 800 or 900 miles on it and it gets a solid 10 mpg. It seems as if when I drive around 80 or really get into the gas I only get on the 9 side, if I'm easy going and keep it around 65 I get closer to 11. My 351M is completely stock inlcuding the single exhaust and
motorcraft 2 bl carb.
My speedo is off a little, too, but its close. If I'm showing 65 I'm actually doing 70. I would bet a lot of us with speedo's that are off a little (or a lot) also have trucks that came with small tires and when you put on the 31's or 33's it really makes a big difference in the speedometer.
I have done lots of these swaps and have found most of the things to watch for. Your truck has a divorced transfer case so it will be fairly easy. First of all which trans are you using? A regular 2wd trans doesnt leave much room for the driveshaft but there is hope. The ford highboy trucks had automatics behind the 360/390 engines that had a short output shaft and tailstock with a yoke that bolted onto the shaft .I have seen only a couple of these to fit 351/400/460 as they were only available from 73 to 771/2. The 390 trans are pretty scarce as well. IF you find one the output shaft will swap into any C6 . I have several in stock that i would ship to anywhere, they seem to be pretty popular because there are lots of guys doing this swap and so few parts to be found. If you have a donor truck with a 460 it should have everything you need except mounts. You can use your 390 engine mounts but they will have to be turned to line up the bolt holes on the460 block . The transfercase shifter bolted to the tailstock of the 4 spd. It wont work with the auto you will have to find one that came out of an auto truck. If you have any other questions you can email me at mikecolin@sprint.ca Thanx
