turbo bark?

i have a 04 and lately it has been turbo barking really bad. even if im going 20 mph and let off it barks pretty good. what would cause this. I have a bullydog chip but it still does it when its off. When the chip is all the way up it does it worse of course. But also i was driving in pretty high elevation this weekend and the turbo kept cutting out for a split second. at first it did it when the chip was on but also started when i turned the chip off? thanks guys

Its known around here as "turbo fart" but it sounds like your turbo needs a good cleaning. Its not a bad job for the DIY-er. Need to pull the turbo, remove exhaust housing and thuroughly clean the vanes and unison ring.

Granted I'm still learning about my 6.0 and not trying to step on anybody's toes, but is there a difference between "turbo fart" and turbo surge? The chip being on would explain the turbo surge because more fuel and not any more air, don't forget you need both. Like I said I'm still learning because my two previous were 7.3's and My trubos would surge after some power add on's but after some air intake upgrades and a wicked wheel in them would help the cause alot. I know alot of the guys with 6.0's say not to change the stock air intake but I can't imagine the restrictive stock intake tubing being better than a better flowing air intake tubing system with easier corners to turn before entering the engine. Like I said not meaning to step on anyones toes so don't be afraid to let me know when I'm giving some bad advise.

At 20 mph on level road running empty, my turbo might be putting out 3-5 psi. Sounds like you have a problem with either the turbo or your dog program.

+1 on that. The 6.0 doesn't have a wastegate so the turbo pressure ends up coming back out through the air filter box. I agree with cleaning the turbo.

The difference is filtering, or lack thereof. A lot of the aftermarket intakes do not filter anywhere near as well as the stock Donaldson. Debris getting through the filter can = turbo destruction. The consensus is generally that the OEM Donaldson is good up to about 500-550 hp and better than aftermarket.

my turbo was making the same noise after letting of the gas,it almost sounded like wastegate chatter.mines still under warranty so dealership removed and cleaned it for me.i also heard the new flash is supposed to run the vanes in the turbo thru a cycle every few min so carbon build up is less.

Hey everyone I’m knew here but I like reading your post. One that stands out is turbo fart on 6.0 power strokes. I got one from Ford dealership today for just that they put a new turbo on and did not fix it. I pulled all my pids up and found mass air flow out of spec so put a knew one on and gave the 6.0 life again. I have a lot of tricks for the 6.0 and if you need help on something just give me a shout I’m on Facebook or I’ll have to find you on here. Thanks. My name is Richard Mcvey.
