I've removed the ac system from my truck because its just a mud truck and the ac was never charged anyway. I'd like to get the extra engine compartment room just so it would be easier to work in there by removing the big ac box from the firewall. Anyone ever done such a thing and what is really involved? I haven't looked at it in a long time so I'm not sure if thats just bolted in there or what. Thanks!
For correct heated air flow while retaining just the heater portion, you could simply rivet in a sheet metal plate where the evaperator case attached to the firewall, provided the evaperator case doesn't house the heater core and/or blower motor as well on your model. If heater or defrost isn't a concern either, yank it all out and rivet in a plate, otherwise, you will have to obtain a blower case for a non A/C unit.

If you remove the air conditioner box you will have a big hole in your firewall. The best fix is to replace the cab with a non air cab. Maybe you could trade cabs with someone who wants to add airconditioning to their truck.
Swapping cabs is easy...undo about 12 bolts, disconnect the steering column and unplug the wiring harness. You should be able to do it in an afternoon with help. It took me all day but I did it by myself with some 2x4's and a comealong.
There is a limited supply of airconditioned cabs out there so please, if your cab is in good shape, don't cut it up.
An easier option than changing your cab would be to pick up a regular heater from a similar truck. There is quite a large opening left but if you get a piece of, say, 12 gauge steel, you could cover it and just cut whatever openings you need. Maybe make a pattern from the other truck. When you take out your a/c system, start on the inside and take out everything you can. On the engine compartment side, you may have to take off a valve cover but the box should be easy to wiggle out. The weather stripping sealing it to the firewall should be the only resistance after all the in cab parts are removed. Good luck.
I would be interested in any A.C. parts you are discarding. I am going to attempt to get the A.C. working again on my reciently purchased '68 F250. It is missing the compressor and compressor mount (390 engine)and the cab unit looks pretty rough. Good luck with your project and what ever you decide, don't throw that old A.C. stuff out!
