VIN locations
So I have a FrankenFord. The F100 only came in 2wd (at least in 79 any way) But the truck is a 4wd so obviously there has been a frame swap. Where would I look to find the vin on the frame, engine and tranny?

I dont think there are any vin numbers on the motor or trany just casting numbers. I would take the vin number of the drivers side door and run it though a vin decoder it will tell you how the truck was was built.

The VIN is found in two locations on the frame. The easiest to see is top passenger side frame rail about even with the alternator. The second is also on the top right frame rail. This one is about even with the transmission, about 4" behind the cab mount.
For title purposes this is the VIN that you need to use. The door VIN doesn't have any legal standing because it is so easy to change. Ford refers to the metal door plate as a warranty plate.

I'm not to sure about the F-100 in 79 but I have seen several of these in 4wd just can't put my finger on a 79 for certain. If your door tag is there you should have all the info you need. There is a tag on the rhs front of the bed but I don't know what codes or numbers are on it but I know its there. I had a truck once that had numbers stamped in the bottom of the frame on the drivers side just about under the rear of the seat or about 2' behind the radius arm bracket.
