Engine swap question

Earlier I posted about looking for a different engine. I got some great advise. Thanks guy's. One more question. I found a deal on a 05 out of a F550. It was a 6 speed manual. What is involved in installing my auto trans on it instead?

Remove the manual trans flywheel. Bolt on the automatic trans flex plate. Now the engine has been converted to one that will mate to an automatic. It's that simple.

Mark, I want to hijack my own thread

Mark,

I think I remember you getting involved in a discussion regarding larger capacity transmission sumps. If I recall correctly you commented that larger sumps do not result in lower oil temps or something like that due to the external oil cooler. I was talking to my girl friends son who is a Ford fanatic and a pretty fair hot rod mechanic. He disagreed with my synopsis of my recollection of your statement. Did I recall correctly?
PM if you like

Thanks for the quick response on the 6 speed

Yes, you remembered correctly. A larger pan won't help cool the trans. It will take longer to get hot, but will also take longer to cool.

A mechanic sees more fluid and a finned pan and thinks it has to cool better.

An engineer sees that the air around the pan is heated by the hot air coming off the radiator and from radiant heat from the exhaust. He also sees that there is little fluid moving on the inside surface of the pan, which reduces heat transfer.

If you want to cool a trans get a better cooler. A pan won't do it.

Another question for the wizards

Guys

I sort of asked this earlier but I will try to be more specific. Will a 05, 06 or 07 engine bolt right up to the 04 frame and transmission? Are the engine mounts the same or are there any fit interferences due to the suspension changes in 05? I am aware of the engine changes thanks to Bismic's great post. I found 2 real good deals on 06 engines with low miles. One is out of an 06 F550. Anyone see an issue there with it bolting in? Thanks for all the help

Bump for ya. What if they were different, which I assume they aren't, but couldn't you just switch the motor mounts off the 04 onto the new motor if they were? Curious myself. Just trying to learn something here.

there may be a differance in one of the mounts. one style has a mount with three bolts, one with four. the differance here is just the mount not the locations. so all that would be needed is swaping one mount to the new engine.

coverd that in the last post they are different. as well as the pcm's. as long as the icp is in the same spot all that should need to happen is to use the parts from the 04 like the intake air horn and harness. I think it would work fine. but the op's question this time is will it fit and yes it will.
