rear brake question

I have a 1997 F-150 XL 4x4 with the 4.6 liter Triton V8 and rear brake drums. How do I adjust the rear brakes?

drum brakes are self adjusting... if you just want to check them, or you are installing new, the easy way is to jack the tire up 2 inches off the ground and remove the wheel/tire. Pull the brake drum off of the 5 studs. at the bottom inside, you will see a small adjustable bolt, slotted on both ends that engages the shoes. In the center is a star wheel washer that drags on a spring. you can turn the star wheel one click at a time to get more tight or more loose. To check you turn the screw 4-5 click and then try to put the drum back on. If it slides on, takek it off and adjust 4-5 more clicks, etc... Once it will not go on, back off 5 click and then install the drum, that is it. The self adjuster will take care of hte rest as things wear.
