I have a 74 f350 4x4, I think, frame and would like to varafy that it's a 1 ton and not a 3/4 ton frame. Were there any major differances? Where would I find the ID # and how would I decode it.
Thanks again, Craig
Hi Craig, to make this easy Ford didnt produce an F350 4x4 until 1979. To make things confusing they put a dana 60 axle under the front of some F250 4x4s but it was the low pinion axle with a divorced transfer case. I have 2 of these trucks, with 1 being a crewcab. The way to tell the difference between the early axles and the 79 and up is where the pinion gear enters the case.If it is below the centerline of the axle housing it will be an early version. If the pinion comes in above the centerline of the housing it is a 79 up. The vin of the truck will be stamped on the frame on the drivers side about 18" back from the front cab mount. If the # starts with F26 that designates the truck as being an F250 4x4. Back in the early 70s Ford called their 4x4s an F160 for 1/2 ton and F260 for a 3/4. Any time you see an early 70s 4x thats what the 6 stands for in the vin. Hope this helps thanx.
