i need some information on changing an 87 302 EFI to an 85 carb 351W. am currently confused on what to do with fuel pump... can i eliminate high pressure fuel pump and hook up low pressure pump from tank to my mechanical pump??? and do i have to change the distributor? and any other valuable info during this swap?
is the 85 carbed 351 already running as a carbed engine? I dont understand the distributer question if it is but you won't need the hight pressure FP anymore fwiw.
ok it would be a better idea to get a high quality pressure regulatorand keep the electric pump the distributors are the same for the 302 and 351 and since u arent going to be using the ecu u should prolly go with the one that has the vacuum advance....
if you disconnect the high pressure pump wiring harness, and connect the fuel line to the mechanical pump, will that work? and also what do you do with the return line?
so how do i wire up the distributor which has three wires hanging off and the coil as well which has two? the efi engine had seven wires coming off the distributor and no color codes we can find, have tried multiple combinations but no luck thus far
The housings are the same, but the 351 shaft is longer due to the taller deck height of the 351.
Close... the 5.8 uses a larger diameter oil pump driveshaft so the body at the base where it enters the block is also larger(0.515" vs 0.452") in diameter, total distributor height is about the same though I hesitate to say they are exactly the same.

Hmmmm...
I remember the oil pump drive difference. Wasn't there a difference between shaft length on carb vs EFI? Maybe that's what I was thinking of.
I know the housings were the same, I remember swapping shafts out of 351 distributors and putting them in 302 housings when doing swaps in Mustangs due to the remote TFI module location in the trucks.
thanks that wiring diagram was great by the way. but since the ignition module is on the distributor on the 87 but can not be interchanged to the 85 do i need to go out and buy a module for it or is there a way i can get around it?

I don't think the low pressure pump will draw through the high pressure pump.
Unless you change the tank to a carb tank, you'll have to getto it and cap the retun line.
In my opinion if you are putting in an '85 351 the simplest and most reliable thing to do is get a blue grommet DSII module and wire it as shown.
The distributor and coil on the 351 will work with this setup.
