4X4 clicking

I have a 1987 f150 4 speed. Recently I was driving down the road with my hubs locked (in 2wd) and i heard a clicking. I pulled over, unlocked the hubs and went on my way and didn't hear the clicking anymore. Then a couple days ago I had to put my truck in 4X4 and the front wheels were not spinning and all I heard was a really bad clicking noise (way worse than the one driving down the road). If anyone has ideas of what this may be, I'd love to hear them.

Doesnt spin in 2wd. hubs arent locked so wheels are just spinning on spindle.

every thing here says broke axle if its in 2wd with the hubs unlocked it wont turn

if u have the hubs locked they turn in 2wd

or u may have stripped hubs

Universal Joints may be going bad in it as well. I had a similar problem with a clicking noise from my drive shaft and it turned out to be the rear U-joint was going bad. I would look into those as well, since they do not spin when the hubs are unlocked.

yea that could be the case but since he had it in 4wd and the wheels wasnt turning and it was popping its more than likely stripped hubs or broke axle

Do you have auto hubs?

I had the same thing happen and it was the hubs so I replaced them with warn manual hubs.

I don't think it would be the u joints because they were replaced within the last 2 months. And my hubs are manual lock outs.

Get in the truck and have someone listen from side to side when it is clicking.

Jack the rear end up and put it on jack stands, lock your hubs in, shift it into 4 wheel drive and put it in gear and have someone look from the side (so as not to get run over)to see which axle is turning up front while you are on the ready for the brake in case it would take hold. If the front drive shaft is spinning then one of the front axles should be as well unless your problem in in the diff itself. I had a pinion break behind the bearing once that prevented the axles from spinning. You have an open differential up front and the axle with the least resistance will be the one turning and it will also be the one with the problem. The passenger side uses a two piece axle that could be stripped if not that and the axle isn't broken its a stripped hub or incorrectly installed hub.
