Something to think about next time.

I'm posting this to share what happen and what led up to finding this problem.

A couple years ago I pick up a 1991 F250 4X4 with a 351 and a E4OD. I picked this truck up for $500 as it was having a few problems. That and the place the poor guy was taking it to for repairs was ripping him off. ( yes I told him everything I found and said he should take um to court ) That's a story for another day. The engine ran but the trans would not move. So I bought it for parts.... so I thought. Had it flat bedded home as the wheels were locked up and I could not get it on my car hauler. I popped the rear drums off ( one was cracked so much for new rear breaks ) Both front calipers were frozen ( they were new as well yea right ) I pulled the stick on the trans... Dry. Found the lines were all rotted out but I dumped 2 gallons in there and drive the truck around the yard! Wooo

So I put about 1000.00 in new breaks all the way around, new front axle shaft U's , trans lines, and a few other odds and ends. Slapped a plow on the front and took off. Motor run but not a super strong runner, Trans slips some. It will grab 2nd and kind of slow down a little then build up speed but 1st, 3rd were strong and the truck lagged real bad in 4th so I never used it.

OK over 2 years later. ..... Truck had a rear drive shaft U let go... OK no big deal drop the plow back it in the barn and put the rear on ramps, run air jack under front pick it up place on stand, ratchet strap the rear wheels to the ramps. ( safety first ) I figure I'll just do both front and rear shaft U's and be done. I found my rear Diff cover very rotted and leaking oil? OK Hit the parts store grab U's and diff cover. Parts guy put a gallon of 90W gear oil next to cover. Took me almost a hour to get 3 1/2 Qt in that little 1/2 pipe hole! LOL But that's later on.

So I start pulling the cover and found about 1Qt, nasty looking oil, about 1/2 Qt water. Some one had popped the cover and, did not use a gasket and used some clear crappy make a gasket on there that looks as they missed half the mounting surface! Even the inside of the diff cover has rust on it. I let it sit for a couple hours to let everything drip off. I wiped everything I could with rags. Using some thinner I wiped all the crap off the bottom of the diff housing. Let it sit for about 30 min to dry out. Look around making sure I get out all I can. Put on new cover with gasket and some black RTV, let it sit over night and fill the diff.

Took it out plowing last night and OMG !!! What a HUGH difference in this truck. You know how you kind of get use to how hard to push your gas peddle for a speed... well I was rolling along , In 4 wheel, plow on and up, in a 35 Mph zone and happen to look down and im doing little over 50 !! Opps ! almost all my sluggish is gone. Truck feels completely different now!

Sorry for such a long post just thought I would share and maybe it will help someone with the same problem or at least give ya something to check.

Actually the differential covers do not have gaskets when they leave the factory, instead the OEMs use the Ultra Grey RTV. I bet someone was trying to recreate that, but they used the wrong sealer and as a result did a ****-poor job. But ya know when they say that running synthetic gear oil in the axles help out in power and fuel economy? I think you saw the most-extreme negative end of that.
