I hate little bureaucrats, I know they have a job to do but some of them, well most that I've had to deal, are little power hungry dweebs. I have no idea of your exact situation, so I can't say who in your situation is more of the **** but from my experience I'll side with you.

When I first started my business I moved into a run down ex-feed mill an acquaintance owned. It was a real dump but it was all I could afford at the time. We cleaned it up and gave it a coat of paint. One day I had a vendor's salesman stop by, the suit and tie type. As we were talking a short fat guy with jeans and an old flannel shirt came in and stood in the doorway. I thought he was truck driver with a delivery so I asked if I could help and in a loud voice he bellers, "I'm the village building inspector and I want to know what's going on outside!" The landlord was putting a new roof on the building and while doing so one wall collapsed (I told you this was a dump) and he and his friends reconstructed the wall over the weekend. I told the inspector they were redoing the roof and he had a building permit for it. He again bellered, "He has a permit for the roof but not the wall. And if there's another nail driven I'll shut the whole place down!", "You tell your landlord I want to talk to him ASAP!" and turned and trotted out. I stood there for a minute in mild shock and after the salesman left I got to thinking about what happened. I called the village hall and asked to talk to the village administrator but since is was 4:00 on a Friday afternoon everyone of importance was gone for the weekend but I left a very long stern message telling the administrator what went on and that he was to call me Monday morning first thing. I told him not "Monday afternoon, not even late morning, very first thing." Monday morning he calls and we have a very nice discussion. I reminded him that he and his building inspector worked for me and if I had an employee in my shop that treated me like his inspector treated me I'll physically kick him in the a$$ out of my shop and that's what I should have done to his building inspector. I told him I had a person in the shop with a suit and tie that he could have been a customer, his inspector had no right bellering in my shop and making a scene. If he wanted to talk to me about something he should have done it in more business manner, somewhere private so whoever was my shop wouldn't be able to hear our discussion. About a half hour after we hung up the inspector came strolling into the shop with a ***** eating grin and apologized, saying on the way back to his office Friday he realized he handled the situation in the wrong manner but it was too late to come back and take care of so he waited until Monday morning. I was pi$$ed I let into him and told him how he should have handled the situation and what I would do if he ever pulled this stunt again. He didn't seem to be the big mouth bully he was the Friday before.

I have not patience government employees, you better not be the rude twerp standing behind the DMV counter or municipal building when I come in. I will not tolerate some over paid, under worked bureaucrat. I pay your wages and you better show me the same respect that you show your supervisor because we are your ultimate supervisor.

Man, Kevin, you really hit a hot button with me by posting on this subject.

I hear ya. It really chaps my hiney that my hard earned tax dollars or being used to fund some flunky to drive around all day looking for this kind of stuff. My town has even gone so far as to hire a gal and provide her with a brand new truck to drive around early on Fridays and Saturdays picking up Yard Sale signs from street corners.

Good luck with your battles

Not trying to get on the wrong side of anyone, but keep in mind the guy you yell and scream at today is the guy in control on much of your life tomorrow.
I am not sure how large a town you live in but the lawyer thing is not very scary to most municipalities. Before I moved out in the middle of no where I lived in town. I got into it with the City and mentioned a lawyer and the City official I was speaking to reminded me if I wanted a lawyer and wanted to file suit that was ok as the City had 17 lawyers on staff, all paid whether they were fighting my suit or doing something else. I would be spending my money and they would not be spending any extra.
In my experience all yelling will do is cause you be looked at a lot harder and cause you more heartache in the future.
I would advise you to calm down and try to get what ever is wrong right now fixed and let it go. In my case the someone complained was just someone driving past my house and called in a complaint about too many vehicles in drive. My city had a ordnance about how many people could live in a house and how many cars due to collage students renting a single family home and 8 people all with cars moving in.
My neighbors didn't complain but there was a complaint and the city had to respond to the complaint. I moved the cars and kept them moved around for about a month and parked them back where they started out and never had another complaint for 3 years so go figure.
Good luck but I would just try to comply and forget about it. Figure out exactly what he is saying you are doing wrong and get past that and go on with life.

Purely anectodatal, but I say look for more of this. Yesterday I spotted 8 police cruisers in a 6 mile stretch of rural roadway--all there searching for hardened criminals (you and me) of course! We used to have one deputy sherriff who patrolled 20 miles worth of territory on this side of town--maybe two for the holiday weekend. As more and more municipalities go desperately bankrupt, raising revenue from us seems to be the brilliant idea of the day. I have had too many run ins with petty "authorities" to believe that the system is there to protect my interests. What makes these people tick and where do they breed them? Are they just opportunists getting on the winning side early in the game?

Sorry--sore spot with me too.

Larry,

The compliant attitude is what this government dweebs look for. If I'm in the wrong I will either comply, or if I think the rule is unfair, I try to change it, as least make an effort to have my voice heard. That's the main principle behind our type of government was founded on. Unfortunately, the current national political powers don't seem to want to follow that. If you can't control a small local government body how can we be expected to control the national one? It's my right as a United States citizen to be able to express my opinion when I think something is not right.

I've never been really politically active, other than voting in every election since I turned 18 but lately I will go out of my way to attend local government meetings when there is a subject I feel strongly about and I will sign up to stand in front of the board to give them a piece of my mind. I have also gone out of my way to attend Tea Party rallies that were some distance from my home, taking time off of work to do so. I will not cower from confronting the government because I afraid of what they might do, if I did I would know we have lost and have been over taken over by the government that we are suppose to control.

(This post is going to get closed down pretty so, I'll bet on that )

Hey Kevin,

Just tell them you are an illegal alien from Guatamala and they will do everything they can to leave you alone - you will immediately be immune from any type of law enforcement!

Julie,

Better yet, outfit your truck work area with lots of spools of wire, lots of duct tape, some old road flares (from a distance the look like TNT) stuck in every corner, hang maps of all the important government buildings and tourist attractions on the walls, don't bath for weeks on end, wrap some clothe around your head every time you answer the door. Once you do this I'm sure the feds will tell the local authorities to go down the street and harass the white haired little old lady with the three cats.

You can fight if want to. But they have more time and money than any of us do. If you are violating a city ordinance, you may have more luck going to a council meeting and asking for a variance. Unfortunately, when these ordinances get written, they have language that paints with a broad brush. This allows the enforcement personnel to interpret the ordinance as they see fit.

Also, you say that you asked your neighbors about and they all said that they didn't complain. I think that if they are the type to call the athourites, rather than tell you to your face, then they probably won't fess up when you ask them. How many neighbors did you ask? 3-4? It could be the guy that lives ten houses down and wants to turn you in because he got ticketed for the samer thing 2 years ago.

The ordinance in Sacramanto County says that the vehicle must have been parked in the same location without moving for 2 weeks. I have called on some abandoned vehicles in our neighborhood and they asked me how long it had been there and if there were spider webs under it. They then posted for three days before they hauled it away.

Keep us posted on your progress. Jag

Get your '53 off the street, I doubt you'd be more pissed over having your work truck towed than someone hitting your '53.

You know it's legally parked, but I would call the police station all the same, this way they are aware of the situation. I wouldn't be surprised if they all hate the guy who warned you anyways if he acts like that.

lol or just put a magnetic sticking cover over the business logos and then it's not an issue. Course it shouldn't be an issue anyways... it's like telling you he'll tow you if you work on your truck in your driveway...

Just remember, just cause they're cops doesn't mean they actually know what they're talking about. Most do, most are honest and hard working guys, some are not and they're the ones you have to look out for. I went to college with some of them here (we have a police training course here, you can take some of their classes which is a lot of fun getting credit for going to the range) and not all of them... ok 95% of them here weren't the sharpest tools in the chest.

What do you call a med student who only knows 7 out of 10 answers correctly? Doctor. Same goes for anything else.

And I ranted, sorry, lol. I'd just call the police station so they're aware of it. It's possible the guy was in a bad mood and took it out on you and no one would follow through, espcially if he's wrong which unless you're city has a specific law about it, sounds like he is, completely. Plus if he's wrong and they tow you, you get to sue him, lol. Granite I'm not one for solving problems with sueing, but it makes for a nice threat for Judge Dredd ("I am the law!")

"The compliant attitude is what this government dweebs look for."
I am not suggesting being compliant, I am stating if he is in violation of an ordnance the only sure option is to comply with the law. Yelling and threatening the official "take that badge off son become the guy next door and tell me when and where" is a losing attitude that will cause you more trouble in the future.
If you don't like a law try to change it, but yelling at some small time city employee in never the answer.
I have always been politically active and have helped change several laws. I have testified in front of the Missouri legislature as well as the United States senate about some laws that eventually were changed.
Not going to get in a Pi** contest over right and wrong way to handle things or who is right and who is wrong, however I am well versed in "fighting City Hall" and much of the time winning.
For the most part the "government dweebs" you refer to are hard working honest people working for a living, your friends and neighbors. They go to work, plow the snow and clean out your sewer lines. There are a few that get a overrated sense of their own importance and they give all the hard working public employees a bad name. Those are the ones that need to be reported and dealt with.
Good luck however you want to deal with your local government.

I'm sure that this is an isolated incident or you would have mentioned crossing paths with this individual before. The problem with most of these jackazzes is that they are on a power trip and that isolated incident can soon turn into outright harrassment if you get ahold of the right one. They expect you to do whatever they tell you to without consideration of whether they are right or wrong - because they're the law. If you push the issue, complain, or go over their heads, they will retaliate and make a point of cruising by your place and citing you for having grass 1/4" too long, dog poop in your yard, or whatever minor infraction they can dream up. Of course, it's very difficult to PROVE that they are harassing you.

And that's where you're at. You've got to decide how far you're willing to take it and whether it's worth going to war with a bureaucratic pig because he wants you to move your car. Chances are if you just move it for a day or two he'll forget about it and you'll never see him again.

But if you're really steamed about it, you CAN fight it. Just be prepared for the fallout. I've been there. I fought a cop's ticket for not shovelling my sidewalk. The ticket was issued WHILE it was still snowing at a rate of an inch an hour. His harassment got bad enough that I took the fight to his place. You've got a right to be provided with the name of the jerk who is hassling you and his address is a matter of public record. I played the same game and drove by his place daily and called and complained about something he was doing. I called the police because his porch light was on and causing a glare that was dangerous to motorists. I called the post office because his mailbox wasn't the proper distance from the road. I called the building inspector because he didn't have gutters on his house. I called animal control because his dog was out in the cold unsupervised with no shelter. He gave up and left me alone.

And of course, if that method fails, there's always guerilla warfare. Go down to the bookstore and take the subscription cards out of every magazine you find. IF he's married, make sure that you start with the ****. Fill every last one of them out in his name and check "Bill me later". Even a tough cop can eventually be beaten into submission.

Be careful out there now. Remember the BTK serial killer was a "Code enforcement officer" by day . Goes to show you what creeps they can be!
