I just got an 89 F-150 4x4. Looks to have a 9" rear end??. I thought these year trucks had the 8.8? Rear axle has 3rd member drop out in the front and rear of the axle has no rear cover that can be removed.
Someone swapped it out. That truck came with an 8.8" from the factory. Consider yourself lucky that someone did the work for you, as it's a good upgrade. Hopefully the job was done right.
thatd be something to look into man, the 9" rear end never had a VSS and the 8.8 did, so they had to do something to the axle to relocate the VSS somewhere
The crazy thing is that the old guy I got it from has had the truck since 91' and I called him, he's never done any kind of axle swap. I was all under there and it looks bone stock, nothing weird or strange, looks like its been there since 89!. I read that up till 1988 there were some left over 9" axles that ford tossed in occasionaly to get rid of them, maybe this is a late production 1988 truck coded as an 89' that got one of the last few 9" rear ends. Who knows or cares, its a small up-grade that I'll take.
I'd say that's possible, since the year on the title of the vehicle (especially a Ford) is not an accurate representation of when it was actually built - for instance my '88 Lincoln actually left the assembly line in March '87. About the VSS, in the rear axle, it's only needed for the RABS setup, if he has a proportioning valve like the '80-'86 trucks then there's no need for the rear VSS.
The only thing that the VSS (it's called an ABS sensor in '89) is used for is the RABS. It's not used for anything else, and the truck will run fine with it disconnected.
All '87 & up F-150's had RABS so none of them could have had the 9" from the factory. I'm 100% sure someone swapped it out at some point. Either it happened prior to '91 or the previous owner forgot.
