im not a big fan of off brand parts and tools and what not...but i was at harbor freight-an off brand tool/whatever store, and saw a receiver hitch thats more of a bolt on.... my ? is --the "hitch" on my 78 150 4x4 is more of a steel plate under the bumper that the ball goes through. would this "bolt on" hitch be strong enough to use on the plate, or should i just go with buying a real hitch that mounts to the frame
personal recommendation: get a real receiver. OR, call my dad up and have him build you a bumper with a built in receiver. or better yet, have him build you a flat bed.
The bolt on plate is going to be as strong as your bumper, ok for small loads, but a bumper is not all that hard to bend or pull off, but a good receiver hitch is as strong as your frame. I just got a Valley class 5 receiver hitch from the pick a part this weekend for 15 bucks for my kids Explorer and seen a lot of trucks with them too.
if my dad built it, id like to see anything, and i do mean ANYTHING, bend it. turn it on end in a car crusher, then, just maybe... off topic. sorry. lol.
well its not really a bumper plate i dont think. its a flat piece of steel that i under the bumper with then has its own steel brackets to the frame. ill probably just got with a real hitch. i want to use it as a recovery point(not for me so much as for the chevys and dodges i wheel) with so the real hitch will probably be my best bet. i didnt think of making my own...probably be a lot easier to buy a good one....know of ne places to get a good decent priced one?
I have one that came with my truck that bolts to the bottom of the bumper and the frame. Dunno if it's any good though. It's actually not on the truck right now because I swapped bumpers. Maybe I'll take some pics...
my dad had a 78f150 when he was a lot younger--bought it new!-and still has it actually, but in NC. he said that it was fords trailer hitch. so, im just trying to get a good idea on if its a safe pull spot or not
