I am looking for opinions on the good vs bad of a couple of engins. The first is a solid 74 360FE and the second is a 78 400. I have both engins, one in my dd another in my parts truck(rebuilt less than 5000 ago) thinking about swaping the 360 for the 400/auto. What is the power of both engins stock. The 360 has a 4bbl iron intake and 600 carb and headers. the 400 would get the same thing.
I have nothing against 400's (have one myself) but they were castrated somewhat from the factory due to emissions requirements - doesn't mean they can't be woken-up, though - I don't know if the 360 got a similar treatment but, I would guess not...
do you have the correct tranny and driveshafts to run either one?? that would be a good thing to look into before you pick...they have different bellhousings IIRC, and depending on what tranny they have the shafts could be different lengths...
Its prob not worth it, they're prob gonna be about the same power as they both sit right now, but you can eventually hop up that FE engine more than you can do to a 400. (Yes I know they make parts to build up a 400, but they make more parts for a FE motor.) If it were me I'd stick with the FE if its already in there.
The 360 is in good condition,The 400 is a fresh rebuild. Yes the bolt pattern is diff. but I have all the parts to swap it over (13 parts trucks that I have stripped out for parts)
I was just thinking about maybe a newer engine(400) would be better. The 360 is still a strong runner (over 100,000 miles) but it was a smog engine. The 400 is in my new parts truck that is donating its cab to my truck, with a/c and all sorts of cool stuff and was thinking that I may swap the 400/auto as well.
