So I just broke door handle number three tonight after I fixed the bracket in which the handle mechanism bolts to. The metal around this piece was cracked/tore pretty good, but with the help of a piece of flat steel behind it stopped moving. I opened the door once but the second time it snapped off again.
I thought I remember reading that the cables eventually stretch on these? Anybody have any other ideas? I gave the lock/hinge mechanism a healthy dose of PB blaster this afternoon as well.
i shimmed some stuff behind the cable and the hindge the handle bolts to worked for a while until the metal it's all bolted to tore like yours did so now i gotta fix it
be sure the alignment tang of the new handle is lined up in the hole before you tighten the bolt.
also lube the mechanism the handle mounts to every oil change.
Being an old motorcross guy, I always had one of these in my tool box. I broke my handle the other week so I ordered a new one, lubed the cable, lubed the mechanism and put on the new handle. It works very freely now. I also had to repair the metal that the mechanism mounts to.
and use this kind of lube, or something similiar. AS long as it isn't something like wd-40 or anything that will atract dirt. It needs to be like a graphite or teflon type spray lube.
FARM, check NAPA one of the parts houses can't remember which one having a brain fart but there is a metal one to replace the plastic ones that break all the time. Jeep
Yes the cable gets stretched over time. Same thing happened to me. Got a new one and installed. Not cheap though. Not a bad fix just need a big rivot gun where it attaches near the bottom of the door.
